What to give for a 1st birthday gift???

I am going to a 1st b-day party in a couple weeks and not sure what to give as a gift.

I am close to the mom, the child is a boy. I am hesitant to buy toys b/c I am not too sure what he does/doesn't have. Is clothes too impersonal? I don't want to give a gift card, too impersonal.

I usually give clothes, I dont think its impersonal.
