white gold vs. platinum wedding band

I have a platinum engagement ring & went to look at wedding bands today. Of course since I want diamonds, they are not cheap. A few of the jewelers told me to save a few hundred & get white gold & that it won't matter that my e-ring is platinum & it will look just as nice? What are you doing & do you have any insight about this? Thanks..

Re: white gold vs. platinum wedding band

I'm in the same boat. I am planning to get white gold, because platinum with diamonds-- forget it. I really dont think anyone will be looking closely enough for long enough to know the difference.

Nobody will notice, you're right. My only concern was if the two metals wear differently over time. One jeweler recommended I just be sure to get it polished every 2 years.

I'm in the same boat as you guys!

If we get the rings polished, every so often it will look fine!

I went shopping today to the diamond district. And, reinforced, that its either platnum no diamonds - or diamonds no platnum.

Went with diamonds

Re: white gold vs. platinum wedding band

My engagement ring belonged to his grandmother and is platinum. We didn't have money so we tried the white gold thing to save. We were told by a jeweler that it was our decision, however, the two metals do absolutely have different strengths so BEWARE a platinum ring worn with a white gold ring will wear away the gold ring over time as it is weaker. I was not willing to take this chance so we bought a plain platinum band instead of diamonds and saved that way. Just be careful I didn't want to have to buy another white gold band down the road because it got filed away by the platinum band.

Re: white gold vs. platinum wedding band

Well, when FH was in the market for my E-ring he wanted to buy me platinum. Then the jewler informed him with the setting he wanted the platinum wouldn't hold the setting forever. apparently platinum is a weaker metal, so FH gor me white gold in the long run.

As far as mixmatching between the two, I don't think anyone would know the difference by looking at it.

Re: white gold vs. platinum wedding band

I LOVE white gold jewelry. But since my e-ring is platinum and for something I will be wearing everyday for the rest of my life, I felt it was worth it to splurge on the platinum wedding band. It was only a few hundred $’s more.

Re: white gold vs. platinum wedding band

I was actually told that Plat is much heavier than white gold and is a stronger metal. I also got plat to match my e-ring.
