A Grammar Poll!

This weekend my cousins sparked a debate about a very popular phrase...which one do you say:

'All of a sudden...'

OR

'All of the sudden...'

Which do you say? Apparently 'a sudden' is the correct grammar but if it wasn't for someone pointing it out, I would've never realized! I say 'the sudden' and plan on sticking with it regardless

'sudden' is not a noun, so it doesnt make sense to have it preceded by 'the'

I always say 'a sudden'

Now that I'm thinking about the word 'sudden' its a realy weird sounding word...keep saying it over and over. It's weird! (Or Maybe I'm just the weird one

i suppose i stand corrected - and ITA Colleen, this weekend we were all cracking up because if you say 'sudden' over and over, it barely makes sense anymore!
