A question about exercise...

Throughout the day I'll throw the wii fit on and do the jog in place thing...

Say I'm looking for an hour every day.

Should I really try to do 2 30 minute sessions

Or can I break them down into like... 15 minute or 10 minute bouts?

Is the calorie burning benefit essentially the same?

I mean I'm sure it's a little less -- but is it a LOT less?

Re: A question about exercise...

Breaking down your excercise into two shorter sessions can actually be beneficial. You can push yourself harder for 30 minutes then you can for 1 hour, therefore you can a 30 minute more intense workout twice a day.
However, its also good to do hour workouts in order to build up your endurance.

Re: A question about exercise...

I mean... I can handle the 30 minute sessions but I get bored.

I'm happy to do 15 or 20.

Is it pointless to do this or can I look at it as 'at least I'm up and moving regardless..'?

Re: A question about exercise...

i think it's actually good to break it up

if you keep doing the same thing for too long, your body will get used to it and it won't be as beneficial.

they say if you're runnign on the treadmill, for example, you should change the speed every few minutes to push your limits .... it's gotta be sorta similar to this, no?

ps: i totally have no idea about this... i'm a freaking computer nerd, not a jock

Re: A question about exercise...

i believe they say anything less than 20 min for cardio doesn't do too much because your heart rate doesn't get up enough....so i think two 30 min sessions is perfect

Re: A question about exercise...

I would say its good to break it up but it would you be willing to sweat possibly 2x a day? You would want to be getting your heart rate up enough to break a sweat. DH sometimes goes 2x a day and showers both times...I'm too lazy, I'd rather just work out once and have to shower only once.

Re: A question about exercise...

yeah but i'm talking strictly for calorie burning purposes...

i mean you burn calories just by being alive, right?

so i mean even i'm not going full throttle -- i'm still burning some?

i hate you all for telling me to jog in place for 30 minutes - 1 hour.

i'll curse you everyday while i'm bored out of my mind. just FYI

Re: A question about exercise...

why don't you try something more exciting than running in place if boredom is your main problem?

There is an amazing cardio/toning workout from tony horton called medicine ball something or other (you can use light 2-3lb weights or no weights at all)....

You will sweat your @ss off and it is fun...in a really painful kinda way!

60% of your daily intake of calories are burned just keeping up with your normal life processes (respiration, transport, etc.)

If you want to determine how many calories you burn just by being alive, you would want to find out your basal metabolic heartrate. Generally an 'easy way' to find that out is to multiply your weight by 10. Of course this does not take into account things such as lean muscle and individual body composition which will increase your BMR.

in order to lose weight you would want to create a calorie deficiet of about 500 calories per day to lose 1 lb/week. You can do this through excercise or cutting out calories (or even better- both).

Running in place would be hard for an hour. What about tabata? You do one excercises 8 times- 20 seconds on with 10 seconds rest. You do them at high intensity. You can pick any excercise- jumping jacks, burpees, squats, etc. It's agreat way to work up a sweat, burn calories and tone in only 4 minutes per excercise.
