Do you purposely use big words?

I have someone I work with but in another office who when she emails me puts in big words and I just don't get the point. The one email was giving me info on someone to run a life insurance quote. She gives me the height and weight and tells me she's an ectomorph...not having a clue what this word is I google it and see that it's someone skinny and frail. So I think it could be a medical condition and talk to my underwriters. My basic vent about this is why use a big word when a more common language would suit the purpose.

Re: Do you purposely use big words?

i absolutely agree ... using big words makes you come off as arrogant and annoying!

ETA: Sorry if i offended you gals with this - i really didn't mean that EVERYONE who uses big words is arrogant. It's just when a word is used for the sole purpose of making others feel stupid (which i feel was happening here with 'ectomorph'). Sorry it didn't quite come out right!

Greatest part was that I think she went out of her way to find another word for 'skinny' - turns out instead of being 5'7'' 125 lbs the person is 5'9'' 143 lbs...not saying that's not skinny but definitely wouldn't use a word that means frail!!!

Re: Do you purposely use big words?

I consider myself to by highly educated, and would not use a word like ectomorph. I'm not afraid of big words, and use them frequently.

However, some people are asses. I love pointing out asses, so I would have sent an e-mail back telling her that this woman would not be considered frail by any means, and then copy and paste the thesaurus.com answer for thin. But I'm a biach like that.

Using 'big' words in an arrogant and condescending manner...yes, I agree.

But using them properly and in regular conversation/correspondence is fine. There's only one way to really learn new words, and that's by using them.

People can come across as arrogant and annoying by using a basic vocabulary as well.

Didn't want to start any trouble...but there is a definite difference between people who know a language and use it to the best capacity. But just in this instance where a word was used (and in a way that could have caused more problems than needed) just irked me.

ITA. However, I do think that it's very easy to tell who forces big words...usually it's because they use them improperly .

Re: Do you purposely use big words?

There are alot of words I use in writing up reports and correspondence with co-workers. I sometimes slip those words into every day vocabulary. Sometimes it just sounds awkward speaking that way though!

I agree with this 100% .. Im not going to dumb down my vocabulary to suit others. If Im talking to someone and they dont understand a word I use I think Im pretty aware of the reaction and so I'll say another word that'll clarify what Im talking about in a way that nobody feels embarrassed or bad.
