getting your eyes dialated?

I haven't had this done in a few years. I might have to on Thursday. I kind of want to die and tell them FKKKKKK NO. How bad is it? I can't remember...I had it done like 3 years ago. I'll have to get myself home from the city on the subway, if that makes any difference. And I'm extremely near sighted. Extremely.

I looked online but almost threw up so I figured I'd ask here for whatever reason..

ETA: I can't wear my contacts because of the eye problem I'm dealing with now and I don't have prescription sunglasses, just regular glasses. And with the eye prob I'm dealing with, I'm way more sensitive to light than I usually am...which on a day-to-day basis, is a pretty heavy sensitivity to light.

Re: getting your eyes dialated?

dont they just put drops in your eyes to dialate them and then look in them and then you have to wear sunglasses afterwards for a few hours?

Re: getting your eyes dialated?

I went with DH when he got his eyes dilated a couple of months ago, and he was able to drive to work shortly after. He said he was able to read the signs and such, so it must not have been that bad!

Re: getting your eyes dialated?

I'd have someone available to drive to you home. Dilation isn't bad at all but you can be a little bit blurry and light sensitive afterwards. What eye problem do you have?

Re: getting your eyes dialated?

don't they have those sunglasses they can give you to put over your glasses? true, they're not the best fashion statement, but they can help you out!

Re: getting your eyes dialated?

Meh...I can't...I wish I could but I need to go on Thursday, no other day will work for me.

They said I 'might' have to get it done. So I think I'm going to pretend that I had no idea that I 'might' need to have had it done and tell them that I simply can't.

Scratched corneas...it's a follow-up appointment to see if they healed properly.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh!

Re: getting your eyes dialated?

There's another test they can do instead of dilating your eyes. I think it cost extra $$ but I did it last time because I was on my lunch break at work and needed to see.

ETA: Hmmm not sure if this test will work for a scratched cornea but it's worth asking about! You are the only other person I'd ever met to have the same anxiety over this. I HATE it.

They can definitely check your corneas without dialating your eyes. Dialatiion is most useful for looking at the back of the eye ( retina, optic nerve etc) You can always tell them that you have no one to drive you home and ask them to do the procedure on another day ( hopefully, when DH is with you).

Re: getting your eyes dialated?

Its definitely not a big deal...the last time I had it done I drove myself home with no problem.

They should definitely have the big stupid sunglasses to put over your regular ones, and then you can look crazy on the way home and people will stay away from you

Re: getting your eyes dialated?

I get my eyes dialated once a year because my dad has glucoma & before him my grandmother had glucoma. I have a whole slew of eye problems. I scratched my cornea as a kid, then again only a few years ago. I also have a cataract in the center of one of my eyes that needs to be checked up on. As well I also found out that I have Keratoconus, which means my cornea is more cone shaped then it should be.

As far as getting my eyes dialated goes, it never gets any easier. I always make the appointment at a time when someone can accompany me or atleast meet me after. I personally feel like I can't not fully see correctly with my eye glass on until a day later.
Good Luck.
