Giving up TV?!

So the Lent convo got me wondering...

Has anyone ever given up watching TV for any period of time? Not only was I thinking about giving it up for Lent, but just in general. I'm a big thinker, but not a big do-er (if that makes sense...)!

So I'm think about cutting TV out of my life for a period of time to see if I can start using my time more productivly. I have a list a mile long of things I want to do... read more, start a blog, make a photo book, finish my TY cards (unforgivable, i know ) do our wedding album, do some redecorating, and so on and so forth...

Any thoughts on this one? Am I nuts

Re: Giving up TV?!

Honestly I couldn't do it. I really enjoy watching some shows and it's my only time to kinda zone out for the day which I think is necessary for everyone. I'm not a big book person so I do reading for school so tv time is necessary lol.

Perhaps allowing yourself to only watch a certain amount of t.v. is more realistic if you think your over-doing it and taking time away from being more productive.

If you can and do do it though kudos to you!

(Btw, I haven't gotten my TY's out either so don't feel bad. Hopefully they'll go out tomorrow).

Re: Giving up TV?!

I very rarely watch TV so it wouldn't be a problem for me. In fact, I could easily give up TV for a year, let alone 40 days. I'm just not a TV person.

Re: Giving up TV?!

You're not nuts. I went without TV for a long time a few years ago - once the initial sting wore off, I found myself to be super productive! LOL

Even now...we have cable and all, but we don't watch it too much. It's on for about 15 minutes in the morning so I can watch NY1, and then at night it's on for maybe...an hour?
Last night DH played guitar and I read a book.

Re: Giving up TV?!

if you can do it.. kudos.
i know i couldn't.
I'm way too into certain shows to miss them.
I think the more logical thing to do is to limit yourself.
I know what days/times my favorite shows are on... thats when I watch tv. unless I'm super bored then I'll browse channels. but i usually read or play on the pc/ipad.

Re: Giving up TV?!

I rely on TV so much...but half the time there's nothing really good on but I'll end up finding something. I could probably be more productive if I cut out TV on specific days...that way it could be something I look forward to when I'm 'allowed' to watch it.

I've thought about doing this but obviously haven't acted on it.

Re: Giving up TV?!

I honestly don't watch much TV, so I've definitely cut it out of my life for at least a week before without even trying. Honestly, I'd be better off giving up reading for Lent if I wanted to get all those things done. I know I have a list a mile long, too! You should try it- even if it's just for a week. Who knows, you might like it and stick with it!

This is what I'm hoping for! For example, we watched TV for 4 hours last night. From 6:30pm to 10:30pm... 2 DVR'd episodes of CSI, 1 CSI Miami, 1 Top Chef and then fell asleep to some Criminal Minds... really? Is this what my life is reduced to when I am constantly complaining about not getting other things done?

I want to start tonight, yet DH just emailed me 'we HAVE to watch the Knicks game tonight!' Clearly need to get him on board...

Re: Giving up TV?!

Blasphemy.

Seriously though, I watch SO much TV. I know its bad but I need the zoning out and vegging aspect of it too much!

Although I, too, have lived places for periods of time (6 weeks, 2 months, etc) where there was no TV. If I have lots of books I can do that because books have the same effect for me.

Re: Giving up TV?!

i ALWAYS choose tv over books. I have a few that I bought and completely intend to read, but just don't get to it because watching tv is easier. Don't have to do much thinking. Not that reading is such a chore, but I just don't choose it first. Yay I'm getting inspired already - i totes think i can do it. we'll seeeeeeee
