You have to go to the social security office and fill out a form. You need your marriage license and proof of citizenship (drivers license, passport, non driver ID, birth certificate). If you go on the ssa.gov website they have a section for it.My question is do you have to go to the office or can you do this by mail?

You can choose to go to the SS bldg. or go through the mail. However, you have to mail in original docs they wont accept copies. If you decide to go to SS, go early!! HTH!

I'm using missnowmrs.com - it's great! But yeah if you're mailing you need original documents but this site has an option to request multiple copies of your original marriage license. HTH!

You do not need to pay for any service. Go to SS Office, bring your Marriage Certificate and two forms of Photo ID, if you have your SS Card you can bring it, but I did not.You can do the DMV the same day... just need your Marriage License there.
Once your SSN is update with your new name you just call all your credit cards. The bank and Mortgage company will require the Marriage License.
