Ohhh holidays....

I feel like every year all DH and I do is run all over the place to each family to make everyone happy...dinner here, dessert there...it's so much driving around and we are the ones not enjoying ourselves.

We can't figure out another solution that works though, we argue but always end up sticking to the same plan...our house is too small to even have a dinner party for 4, let alone a holiday.

I'm just venting! I'm sure many of you feel the same way.

It makes the holidays that much less enjoyable.....

Re: Ohhh holidays....

Awww sorry to hear that. I wish I had that problem. We only have 1 place to go.

We were debating for a while on what to do for Christmas and we decided just to make ourselves a new tradition. Stay home Christmas Eve, spend time together, watch holiday movies then we'll go to see his family (since we have no other) for dinner.

Can you switch things up and enjoy the holidays together just you two for the majority of it? What about a blend of your families?

Re: Ohhh holidays....

I had this problem before and had to stop because it was driving us crazy. My inlaws are divorce which makes it even harder. So what we do now is for Thanksgiving we'll spend it with his father side of the family, for Christmas will be his mother side and New Years is my family. And every year we rotate. No more running around. We now stay put in one place and make the best of it. Oh and for our friends, we make a dinner on a non holiday day.

Re: Ohhh holidays....

i know how you feel!!! DH and i came to a solution though....
we alternate thanksgiving...one year with his family and one year with mine.
for christmas, we go to christmas eve dinner with his family and christmas day with my family.
its the best of both worlds bc you dont go crazy running around and you get to see everyone. ideally seeing both families during thanksgiving would be nice, but its not feasible for us and christmas is only a month later so we get to see everyone.

Re: Ohhh holidays....

I have to say that I LOVE the alternating Thanksgiving idea. DH and I are currently having this problem with Thanksgiving. It's one of DH's favorite holidays and he LOVES sitting around eating all day, watching football but with both families it doesn't work like that. PLUS, he doesn't have off the day after so we have to come home kinda early. We're going to my parents 12-4 and then his parents 4:30-9 and then home to relax a little before bed.

Christmas Eve we do with his parents and christmas day we do with mine, however NOW his mom changed it to doing Christmas Eve with Dh's brother-in-law's parents and now it's too much. DH is P*SSED, as well as I that his mom won't just tell people 'NO! You get them Christmas Day!' and just do the family. Who spends holiday's with their husband's brother-in-law's family?!?!?! Is that even normal? (sorry we're drinking a lot of haterade towards his family lately)

Vent over

Re: Ohhh holidays....

Aww I am so sorry you are going through this. I cook every holiday and invite everyone over. (I do have the room-thankfully) whoever comes-comes. Whoever doesn't-doesn't. My in laws are divorced as well-my FIL comes from 1230-5 my MIL comes from 5-12 lol it is what it is

Re: Ohhh holidays....

Thanks girls!! I just told me mom we can't do the split thing this year but we'll do Thanksgiving next year with them...I felt awful because she was so disappointed but we always play flay football with our friends Thanksgiving morning (it's tradition) and by the time we play and shower, we'd be rushing to drive the hour to my parents to stay for a half hour and rush back for dinner with DH's family. It just made no sense.

I think my mom understood about all the travelling though...I just hated hearing that upset tone!
