relocation to DC
DH is very interested in an opportunity with one of the best companies in his field and most of the positions are located down in DC. We may not have to relocate because he might be able to work remotely (M-Th he will have to travel to various clients). What are your thoughts on relocation for work?
I told DH I would do it.....if it is what he really wants.

Re: relocation to DC
totally agreed. i wouldn't relocate and pack up/move our lives for just any job...it has to be the best option.this particular job would nearly triple his already good salary. its like an intense opportunity and i'd be so proud of him.
i'm just so close with my parents and both of our families are in NY. Our lives are here. I guess there would be no harm in moving for a few years.......

move to DC = yes! no doubt!
move to LA = maybe....
why is DC a no brainer? its still a city! great mass transit! and its pretty darn close to NYC! there are tons of ways of commuting between the NY and DC for CHEAP!!!! driving, buses (even nice coach buses like limo liner), plane, amtrak....
on the other hand, if it was like LA>....i know commuting between NYC and the west coast is more costly and even the time zone change creates some barriers when trying to connect, etc.
so basically, i say YAY. do it!

Me, personally, I wouldn't move because I couldn't leave my family. A tripled salary is amazing, but time with your family is priceless. We're looking at houses and I decided (even though you get more for your money and the taxes are cheaper) that I didn't want to live in Suffolk- its too far from my family.
IMO many great opportunities will come and go. But your families are the one, permanent thing you have. They aren't going anywhere. If you leave them you lose out on alot. Although it would be very hard to pass up the money and opportunity, I couldn't leave my family.

Re: relocation to DC
I would do it but only if the money was crazy good. DC is pretty close and you can still come to see your family.

Re: relocation to DC
it's a really tough decision. i've seen it work really well for some people, and not so well for other people. luckily you would be moving to another city, so obviously with a good salary and comparable cost of living, if you ever moved back to NY it wouldn't be a total shock.but i know people who have moved to smaller areas in other states and then pretty much couldn't afford to live in NY anymore or find jobs here.
i'm nervous about this prospect too because DH's company is global and he's currently traveling to Canada 3 out of 4 weeks in a month for 2-3 days at a time. it interrupts our whole flow. i know we won't move to Canada, but he talks about maybe Chicago or San Fran and that seems too far from our families and friends...
no help here but lots of

I agree with you...can't just be for any job. I would be nervous to do it cause all my friends and family are here. But then again it's not moving across the country - you're still a car ride away (and not a plane ride). If you're needed you can jump in the car and go whenever you want or whenever your friens/family want.
It's easier said than done though. Maybe they have a DCweddings website...
or DC families to get you integrated.

Re: relocation to DC
If it were me... I'd say yes. 1. I'm pretty sure I'd be able to find a job in DC semi-easily and 2. Tripling DH's salary would be life changing for us. 3. It helps that we already have a couple who lives in Alexandria, VA that are good friends of ours.I agree with what other people said, it's a pretty easy commute back to NY. Our friends who live in VA go back and forth to Conn. at least twice a month. Just keep in mind that DC isn't really cheaper then NY. It's a very nice area though.

altho I agree that time w/family is priceless I do have to say from my own experience that the distance doesnt make ur family connections any less close. I see my parents on average once every year and a half and we all are super close, in fact way closer than DH with his who live at the most an hour away with traffic
job opportunities and opportunities for future in the long term are hard to come by to IMO its important to pursue once the cost benefit is considered
if I didnt move a whole country and eventho there is the 7 hour dif, the 12 hr plane flight and just the phone connection I wouldnt be as successful as I am today
family is always there for u if u have good relationship, good high paying jobs in todays market unfortunately not
