Runners!!!

Do you frequently get knee pain when running??

I sprained my knee about 10 years ago and now the past year whenever I run, after about 10 minutes I get a stabbing pain on the side of my knee. Same thing happens after walking for an hour. I love running so much and used to go for miles, but now the pain has forced me to stick with the elliptical and speed walking. (so not the same)

I bought a knee brace but it really doesn't seem to help much.

*sigh*

Any thoughts?

Re: Runners!!!

have you been fitted for good running shoes? I overpronate a lot and when I got stability shoes they really helped a lot. Could it be youre wearing the wrong sneakers?

Re: Runners!!!

I got fitted at Sayville Running Company and they had me go on the machine that they had there. I assume they are the proper sneakers.

Could my sneakers be too old? I bought them about 2 years ago.

Re: Runners!!!

i know you had a previous knee injury, but the pain you describe sounds exactly like ITB syndrome. i have that, and sometimes get super sharp stabbing pains on the outside of my knees.

i used a foam roller and stretch as much as possible before, and more importantly, after running. you're also supposed to ice and take aspirin and stuff, but i don't.

Re: Runners!!!

Just looked it up and that sounds exactly like what I get! My stretching before and after is lacking. I'll try increasing and icing and hopefully that helps!

Thank you!!!

YES! They are DEF too old! I usually buy new ones every 6-9 months, and that's usually my source of knee pain when it happens.

However, I'm a big proponent of icing as well, to keep the inflammation down. Sort of a preventative measure after you run to make sure your knees aren't blowing up from all the stress of running.

Re: Runners!!!

I agree that it def. sounds like ITBS. I have Runner's Knee and I have to stretch alot- before and after my run. I also like to ice my knee alot and use salonpas (they are patches that help relieve the pain)

Sneakers last about 400 miles or 6-9 months, so I would get a new pair.

totally crashing, but i COMPLETELY agree with all of this.

start by getting yourself some new kicks. i need new ones every 5-6 months or I have severe foot and knee pain (i'm an underpronator). new sneakers make a WORLD of difference. Stretching and salon pas are my saviors.
