Never been to Sandals, but IMO, you can't really go wrong in Jamaica. I stayed at Couples Swept Away for DH's 30th birthday last year and it was AMAZING.

I haven't been there, but I think you'll love it. It's the newest resort in Jamaica and he been completely redone. That resort really have everything.Spa, Golf, beach, Rock climbing and this HUGE firepit area! It looks so amazing! We're going back to Sandals next week, but our resort doesn't have the fire pit yet!Anyway it's such a gorgeous resort. Ocho Rios is known for all the of the beautiful lush vegetatio, orchids, waterfalls, etc.

We went there last December and absolutely LOVED it. We had a Beachview room - SO worth it. The view was ridiculous every single morning. Food was delicious, and the whole scene was just great. You can't go wrong!

OMG! You guys are going to loooove it! Jamaica has the most beautiful warm, tranquil water I've ever been in. I did a little review of the place on LIF, so check it out!
Link.
As for advice, none really! They take care of you from the second you get off the plane. They have a little welcome area with free beer while you wait for the shuttle. My best advice, don't drink too much, it's a long ride to the resort (45 minutes from the airport) and there's no bathroom on the bus! lol! I had to pee like a racehorse when we got there.
There will also be a lot of people trying to sell you stuff on the beach. But they aren't all that bad. Once you say no thanks, they move on, but they try to sell you pot left, right, and center. Definitely hit up Lemongrass, the Thai place- it was our favorite restaurant!
