We had our thank you's made up and they have a cute little saying thanking everyone for coming then our names.

Do I have to also hand write a note in or can I just send them like that?

You don't have to, but I think it's nicer to have a short, personal note. Why? Well...we spent eleventy billion man hours planning the wedding, what's a few more on giving people a special thanks? KWIM?

I only wrote on the people that are special to our hearts. Those that we don't really care for (family members or had outs with since the wedding) we just stuffed the envelope. Some people just aren't worth my time.
