Valerian Root for anxiety?

Does anyone take valerian root for anxiety? I have heard it works well- I got the drops from GNC but I'm not sure how many to take- can I put them in chamomile tea? I have had a lot of anxiety since I'm in my last semester of grad school and just trying to get through it. TIA!

Re: Valerian Root for anxiety?

I don't know anytihng about the root but I can ask my SIL...she is an acupuncturist and knows a lot about herbal remedies. I will text her and post some follow up info

Sidenote - I am also in my last semester of grad school and I'm skating on thin ice...ready to snap at any moment! I feel your pain. Good luck!

Hey! Thanks for the response. Good luck to you as well! That would be awesome if you could ask her about the herbs. I totally understand how you feel! I dont think Ive ever been this anxious/stressed before in my life and just having a hard time dealing with it. Have NOT been sleeping well either!

Re: Valerian Root for anxiety?

I posted this on the other board but my DH works in a pharmacy and he says it's really for sleeping..

It may make things worse if you're tired all the time... I mean it will relax you, but I'm in my last semester of Grad school too, and sleep is the last thing I need to be doing right now.

Only a few weeks left!

Re: Valerian Root for anxiety?

My SIL said she doesn't work with Valerian root because it is a 'western herb' and she studied/works with Chinese herbs...however, she looked this up for me and here is what she came up with:

The following doses have been studied in scientific research:

BY MOUTH:
For inability to sleep (insomnia):
400-900 mg valerian extract up to 2 hours before bedtime for as long as 28 days, or
Valerian extract 120 mg, with lemon balm extract 80 mg 3 times daily for up to 30 days, or
A combination product containing valerian extract 187 mg plus hops extract 41.9 mg per tablet, 2 tablets at bedtime for 28 days.
Take valerian 30 minutes to 2 hours before bedtime.

She works with anxiety/stress/insomnia patients all the time...maybe accupuncture or accupressure is an option you can look into? I will FM with more info....

RE:Valerian Root for anxiety?

To be honest, I also took Valerian tincture a couple of times. Just a couple of drops. My advice is - even if things don't work out, try not to. Maximum peppermint or chamomile tea. Meditation and yoga help.
