what's your thoughts on hyphenated married names?

Hyphenated married name fight heats up on Facebook

what's your take?

i wanted to do the hyphen but for practical reasons, just took his last name. it would be nice but it's too long for hyphens... plus, hubby doesn't want me to.

Personally, I want my DH, myself, and our kids to all have the same last name so I'm not for hyphenating. Plus Jillian Sullivan-O'Connor is ridiculous.

I'm not sure I'm going to be changing my name.

I don't mind if people call me Mrs. R, but I'm having a hard time actually doing it.

Ditto.

If I decide to do it legally, I'd try and hyphenate, but DH's is so long that I might not be able to and in that case, I might never change. I can't ditch my last name; I love it.

Re: what's your thoughts on hyphenated married names?

The dentist office called my phone yesterday asking for Mrs DH'slastname

... I was confused.

I didn't change my name. I correct people when they call me by DH's last name.

Even my own mother sends us mail to:

ME AND DH DH'LASTNAME

And I'm like 'Um you know I didn't change names right?'

'Well ... I put you and then his full name.'

I think it's super lame that we are just expected to change our name.

I still dont know what I'm gonna do when we have kids but... I can't wait until my inlaws just assume it will be just DH's name.

I mean let's just forget that I'm the one who has to carry it for 9 months and push it's 9 lb body out of my vagina while DH just sits around and ends up getting all the glory of having a kid with his last name.

Man **** DH.

I'm annoyed now.

Re: what's your thoughts on hyphenated married names?

I love my maiden name!! But I changed it to my ExH's name. After the divorce I kept it for the kids. Now that I am re-married I still have my ex's name. I plan on changing it to my DH's last name eventually. Probably after vacation this summer because I don't want to spend money to change my passport. I would love to go back to my maiden name, and DH doesn't care, but I figure if I took my ex's name then I should take his. I'd be pissed if it was the other way around. If I hyphenated all my names it would be ridiculous! Ryan-Migliore-Giacalone! Funny thing is that I will actually always use all of the names. My kids friend's call me by their name, my old friends use Ryan, and my family and current 'people' use my DH's name. It's crazy! Should have kept my name to begin with.

Who cares? It's none of my business. For me, I didn't want to hyphenate and took DH's name completely.

You can hyphenate:
http://www.health.state.ny.us/vital_records/married.htm

You cannot change your maiden name to your middle name unless you go to civil court.

Exactly what Jill said...I want DH, our kids, and myself to have all the same last name...

Plus I have a VERY Italian last name and so does DH and it would just be too mafia for me.

Re: what's your thoughts on hyphenated married names?

I legally changed my last name to DHs name after we got married. Its something I have always wanted & I feel its a way to tie us together as a family.
As others have said, I also look toward the future & want our children to have the same last name as both of their parents.

The only item that I have not changed my last name is on my work e-mail. Since I work in the same office was MIL, I decided to keep my maiden last name because I do not want any e-mail confusion. Our e-mail address is first inital & last name so I can see this creating a problem.

Re: what's your thoughts on hyphenated married names?

Thank goodness I hyphenated my name! It was so much easier job-hunting to have the name match my diploma/certifications. The only drawback is my initials are PMS.
