Re: Any other young brides tired of being told statistics?!
my FH gets it alot. and i get the why are you marrying someone younger than you? there is a 4 1/2 year difference between us and i am older. he will be 24 when we get married i will be 28. people say, he is just a baby, look how young he is. truth is i think he can act like a 60 year old sometime. like going to bed early, putting the cruise control on the car, listening to the news all the time etc. lol. but i know that he is ready and he knows it, so i feel i do not have to answer to anyone.i myself would have never gotten married at 23, but that is just me and everyone is different. i have noticed that people think b/c you are getting married they can voice their opinion everywhere
. just ignore it and live your life!

I knew a guy who at 27 married a 37 year old woman with 3 kids from a previous marriage - he had a child with someone when he was 24, and then had a baby with her...Don't listen to anyone...

The other day, my FH and I had a guy come over to our house and give us an estimate for new siding. When we told him we were getting married he continued to tell us that '80% of 1st marriages will end in divorce'. That was really nice of him right? Sometimes people really don't know when to keep their mouths close!

Yes, I know how you feel. I am 21 and fiance is 24. Most people close to us know that we will be together forever because they have seen us together. We've been together for 6 years now, since I was 15! Sometimes people who don't know us say, oh you are so young and I just want to smack them in the face. Also, I get a lot of people (especially during PreCana and church meetings) saying we will get divorced because we live together. Come on.....

This whole living together thing is weird. You hear that you shouldn't live together. Then I hear of people getting married and then when they do live together, they get divorced because they didn't know about certain habits or other things.I know there are varying views on this. But there could be negatives either way. I live with my fiance and I am glad to know there will not be any surprises after marriage when it comes to living togther.

Age is not a number. I'm 44 and getting married for the first time. If I had married the guy I spent many of my years with, it would have ended in disaster. Yeah, I'm older, but for the first time in my life I'm sure I've met the man I want to be with for the rest of my life. If you're 21 and feel the same way, screw what everyone says.

YUP! you nailed it. BUT I have to say I wouldnt live with FH until I had the commitment of marriage that was to follow. I was at an age where 'maybe' wasn't good enough. I had too much too lose if it didn't work out.

Speaking as one of the 'older' brides here(I'm 35), I applaud you for speaking up. I should also tell you that unsolicted comments from people are not solely for the younger brides. I get them also. Sometimes they are equally as hurtful and flat out STUPID!
As I reached my 30's, I knew that in the social circles I travel in, that I was becoming less desireable as a mate to many men I THOUGHT I wanted to date. I was told things like:
'People aren't quick to even DATE someone older because they want to get married and have kids right away.'
Judging from the 'When are you going to have kids?' posts I have seen here on LIW, it seems to me that the younger brides are almost neck in neck with us old folk as to when they want to start their families.
OR they say something like:
'At your age, why bother? Why do you want to start now? Don't you think you are too old?'
OR
'Will you be able to have kids?' or
'You are going to have amniocentesis when you get pregnant right? You could have problems.'
(As if I don't have a strong and educated background in disabilities and I don't read)
Put it this way, some people just have a very hard time being happy for others when their lives are filled with gloom and doom. Enjoy this most special time in your life. You will have a great marriage as long as the both of you are grounded with goals. Stay true to yourself.
Speaking form a younger bride I'm 26..well said. Its not all about ruhing into staring families anymore me and FH want to enjoy each other and married life first. By time I get married me and FH will be 28 and not planning a kid at least until 29 one year later. You know sometimes people just don't know what to say.
