Re: Anyone else HATE their job??? (Any NYC teachers especially!))

i worked in LI as a perm. sub and then a TA and have now been in NYC (queens) for the past two years ... while they both have pros and cons and pressures from all different directions, what i find in NYC is that there is just no respect for a teachers' expertise. that is truly what i find most frustrating .. it's like i went to school for NO reason, because anything i learned there means NOTHING to the people i work for ... i am an intelligent, well-informed, and insightful professional, and the NYCDOE doesn't let me express this in ANY way (besides when i SNEAK it into my classroom;) ...
at least when i was in LI (in two prominent districts on the north shore) i felt the teachers voices were heard and respected .. that's what i hope for someday when i say i want a job in LI .. just some simple respect!! (and a slight pay raise )

Re: Anyone else HATE their job??? (Any NYC teachers especially!))

I am soooo glad that there are other people who feel that same as me!!!!

From what I have heard this is a BAD year for teachers all over...NYC and LI.

I used to be a TA in a very nice district on the North Shore and they have no contract this year and are so unhappy!

Teachers can't just teach anymore there is so much BS that goes along with it!!!

And now with all the S*%t hitting the fan with the Central Adminstration all over LI ie..Roslyn, Hempstead..its insane

Re: Anyone else HATE their job??? (Any NYC teachers especially!))

Okay - so I know the grass is almost always greener... - but for those of you who either teach on LI, or have taught in NYC then moved to LI to teach - do you really think it's just as frustrating in both places?

I started teaching last year (NYC Teaching Fellow) and I can't decide if I just don't like the profession, or if I just don't like the nonsense that comes with it. I don't like what I'm teaching - the curriculum sucks. I don't like the discplinary aspect, for the same reason someone described above - the students don't seem to be punished for their actions anymore. I don't like the unnecessary stresses for nonsense, like bulletin boards, and workshops and other stupid stuff. I don't like the community because the parents have no interest in their child's education.

So I keep thinking that if I get a job on LI (like everyone else and their mothers want!!!) that I might like it better. Am I completely wrong?? Should I just go back to the business world where I was actually compensated for my stress, where I didn't HAVE to bring work home, and where I could sit on my computer and chat on LI WEDDINGS during the day too?!?!?!?

You are not kidding. My chair (and she sucks as it is and doesn't do her job) just told us that due to the audit they probably will not let us order textbooks this year- W T F Textbooks we can't have new textbooks??? Are you freaking kidding me These textbooks were bought before my students were freaking born, there is no more room for them to sign their names and they are an embarrassment!!!

even IF something was right, it would never be mentioned -- only focus on the negative ... what a great motivational tactic ... (imagine that's what we did with our students?!)

Re: Anyone else HATE their job??? (Any NYC teachers especially!))

that is one thing i try NOT to do to my kids...for instance, when i 'grade' their papers, i always list the positive things they did, even if it is something like 'handed in on time'. just say 'you know, your charts look great, but we still need to work on blah blah blah. you're doing good, but we need to make the school look amazing.'

at least the custodians always say that my room is the cleanest b/c i make my kids sweep at the end of the day
