What scares me though is how many doctors and residents we have working over 24 hour shifts. My cousin was doing her rotations and once worked over 48 hours straight doing surgery!! We all know we don't work as well when we are sleep deprived, and I don't want a surgeon working on me after working 40 hours straight!

Doctors and nurses that work in hospitals are used to this. They have like three day work-weeks. Relax for the remainder.

Maybe used to it, but their work definitely suffers. Plus, residents also assist and are not used to the hours. And surgeons are often on call anyway, so their 'off' days and nights are not entirely their own.

Doctors are used to it, but residents and interns are not. A typical work week for them is more than 80 hours on, with one day off. There's no way I could have that kind of lifestyle and not have it affect my work...

I did it in college because I was on the newspaper staff and production nights were invevitable all nighters.

I could never do it now from a physical point of view.

I don't think I could do it. What would be even worse which happens a lot, is if these people are salaried and don't get paid extra for staying all night.

Well, if I was on a show like that and had the opportunity to get a million dollar job contract and win a new car, I would do whatever it takes to get the job, even if it meant pulling an all-nighter. Would I do it on a normal basis? Absolutely not, but the people on the Apprentice have such a great opportunity and should be willing to do anything for it. JMO.

Speaking of which I was up until 2 am working last night. I felt guilty stopping at 2 because I know some people worked until 3. I guess it depends on where you work, what's acceptable, if you love your job, your personality, your career goals, salary, etc. I know some people didn't work at all and some like I said worked later. I practically fell asleep at my computer! And I do it only when it is truly required - like 1 or 2 x a year! But that's just me IMO.

I couldn't do it. I work 8 hours with children. I come home more than exhausted. I have 2 year olds that love to be 'chased' all day cuz they love getting into trouble.

that's what the task consumed for. tana, craig, etc have to understand that they're on an interview. leaving kendra on a lurch is totally wrong! i felt so bad for her but at the same time maybe she should've been more assertive but dealing with craig especially, the all mighty elderly dad, would have had a much worse outcome. he just looks down on her and i think it's out of inferiority... kendra's much younger and educationally established. kendra rocked during this task and could've done great w/o them tana and craig throughout. anywya.. they only had a limited time to finish the brochure. either do a half as5 job or do an excellent job... kendra did an excellent job! congrats to her and well deserved!

Before I had a baby, I could do it if I had to but I wouldn't look to do it. When I was 18 I would very often work 19-20 hour shifts and be back at work at 5 am the next morning.

Fortunately for me I'm in banking and I would never have to pull an all nighter. I have worked 13 hour days in banking but that's about it.

As far as the apprentice goes I think Tana wasn't willing to do it because she was exempt and she didn't want to run herself into the ground. And her and Craig also felt that they could have gone to bed early and gotten up early to get it done. Some people are like that.

I'm an atty at a big firm in nyc. In the past year I've done it three times - where I've literally stayed in the office for 24 hours straight. That said, there have been many many many nights where I have been in the office until 2 or 3. Its not the norm but, when there is work that needs to be done - its expected :(

I am with djpill on this one. In many industries in the corporate world, there will be times when you need to work all night - it comes with the turf and you don't expect extra compensation for it. I have worked with many different people during my all-nighters and usually the ones that complain about it and can't do it are the ones who don't get ahead or don't cut it. It isn't like it is all the time - it is once and awhile and you gotta do what you gotta do to get a job done. I have done it and been very productive. I have done almost 2 days straight - it just comes with the turf of an IT person.

But I have also been in situations where I worked all night and was there where I wasn't doing anything - more there just in case or because some lunatic wanted to start working seriously at like midnight - those nights are much tougher. It is much easier to do when you are productive and know your goals and working hard to get them done.

While it ***** to work so many hours and not get paid OT, people who do well on projects by working a late night which I'm sure isn't that common, will benefit with high raises and high bonuses. My brother and my friend both work in finance and work OT without getting paid for it. They get pretty good bonuses though.

Some jobs it's not expected at all though. I think if you have something that has to get done and you're in that kind of career, you're going to look better by working that hard.
