difference between church ceremony and full mass???

Who can tell me the differences between just a wedding ceremony @ catholic church, and the full mass. I was under the impression that a ceremony there was no communion ...but now my father is telling me that there is communion either way (he might just be saying that though).

We were going to opt for the ceremony instead of the full mass, since FH is not catholic and cannot receive communion in my church anyway, and to save time. My family is not happy with this though. What else is done at the ceremony? are there prayers etc?? can someone please fill me in?? TIA

For the ceremony there is no communion for the guests. Ceremony is only 30 minutes.

Re: difference between church ceremony and full mass???

i think that in either ceremony they don't do communion for the groom if he is not catholic.

Re: difference between church ceremony and full mass???

the differance is about 15 minutes from what most of the priests i've spoken to have told me.
there is no communion for the guests if you just have a ceremony.
Talk to your church to find out specifics. They should help you figure all of this out. You have to do Pre-Cana and that is where they normally go over all of this.

um yea maybe i dont have a clue also..

but i know there is communion for bride and groom..in a ceremony....its just less reading....its a half our long...The Liturgy is alot shorter. In a mass everyone is welcome to receive the communion., and you choose two readings.

I thinK for a ceremony They do a short Liturgy , unity candle and then exchange vows, the prayer and then they pronounce you hubby and wifey.

You can ask your church

Re: difference between church ceremony and full mass???

the ceremony consists of the 'liturgy of the word' basically - it is the beginning part of the mass all the way up until the collection . . . not that they collect money but i mean anything BEFORE the collection will be in the ceremony and anything AFTER the collection is the 'liturgy of the eucharist' and will only be included if you have a FULL mass

the ceremony includes:
opening prayer
first reading
second reading
gospel
homily
prayer of the faithful
vows
closing prayer

the B&G do NOT receive communion - there is no communion

let me know if you have any more questions i just got the book yesterday to pick out my readings!
hth!

ETA: you can add the candle ceremony or hand ceremony if you would like but these are not a part of the ceremony and just special touches you can add if you wish!

Re: difference between church ceremony and full mass???

oooh thanks for posting! I was wondering this too since our priest just said its a difference of 15 min....i wasnt sure if that came from just the communion part or if other readings/parts were taken out and/or shortened.

I think the ceremony just omits the communion.

Re: difference between church ceremony and full mass???

My priest told us the ceremony is just a mass that stops after the homily. Instead of doing the communion stuff after the homily, you go straight into bride and groom stuff.
Wow, I have some good vocabulary, huh, lol

We are doing a ceremony b/c FH isn't Catholic, but my fam is just happy we will be married in a church

Re: difference between church ceremony and full mass???

Theres no communion, but that also cuts out the whole doxology/blessing, so it does cut the ceremony short BUTTTTTTT if your priest is a talker it could still run long.

my parents are sooo upset that we are doing a ceremony - i almost changed it to a mass. But then I felt like 'I am already choosing my parents over my husband'

even my MOM told me NOT to tell the priest that my parents wanted the mass - she said to 'pretend' i wanted it - even SHE knows that i have to side with FH sometimes! lol

and THEN she heard IF and only IF the priest is not available - a deacon may be marrying us. . . .well just forget it she totally freaked - i may as well be getting married by a donkey in the middle of a corn field the way she is flipping.
