Engagement Party????

Hi there. What are your feelings about an engagement party??? We are tossed about wether to have one or not??? We have dated a long time (9 1/2 years before we got engaged) so everyone is thrilled that "It finally happened". Do we just party up because this is such a special time or my fear is some people look at an engagement party as being greedy (looking for more gifts) What do you think.. Let me know if you had one etc. Thanks!!!

But thanks for the ideas!!

Lisa

Party????

Hi Concetta- Tough one. I'm Italian and my fam does not do engagement parties. Rob is Jewish and his fam does. The engage party is usually thrown by grooms fam- I think.Anyways, his mom wanted to give us one....a few months after he popped the question. I went back & forth on this one. In the end, I thanked her endlessly but declined. I mentioned that my side does not have these type of get togethers, that everything usually happens at the shower. The shower, to us, is the BIG PARTY! Where, with them, it is opposite. The engagement party is big and the shower is small.

Hope this helps. (Just don't host the party yourself!)

Engagement Party????

Hey I dated for 10 years and our parents gave us an engagement party but a small one with just immediate family and close friends. As with you everyone was thrilled it finally happened and was glad to give us a gift and well I don't know if it is greedy or not but we got engaged in May 99 and the party was in Dec 99 and the Wedding is September 2000 so as long as the time in between is good then people don't mind giving a gift (I think).

Hope this helps. (Just don't host the party yourself!)

Engagement Party????

HI Concetta! Why don't you throw a party, send out invites to "Come celebrate with us". On the invites, you can put "No gifts please, we want to celebrate with you on our engagement" Something like that; not those exact words. This way, you don't come across that way, and if people want to get a gift, they will!

I looked at several to comparison shop for price.

Engagement Party????

Thanks for your responses. I was thinking of just having something very casual and sending the invites to the Bridal party and very close family and friends. Making it an "It finally Happened party". Thanks again for your ideas.

You could even ask the folks at AAA who to speak with. You do pay their fees and they are a lobbyist group. This whole thing is obnoxious.

I"m hoping you just got a bad customer service agent and this will all work out for you. Post or email me privately and let me know how you make out! : )

Engagement Party????

We did a Sunday brunch for immediate family. We were engaged 08/96, had the party 11/96 and were married 12/98. There was a pretty big time gap inbetween. My brother and future SIL are planning theirs for April & inviting 200 people. It's whatever you want to do. We opted to do something intimate.

I hope this helps! May be less aggrevating than fighting the airlines......

Engagement Party????

Concetta,

I definetely think the idea of an engagement dinner for close family and friends is perfect if you are hesitant about throwing a big party. You could definetely do something fun on the invite about "Finally tying the knot!".

Good luck, Stephanie

Engagement Party????

I had an engagement party. We kept it just family and the bridal party. We did not do anything too formal. We were at a restuarant with a Chinese Buffet. I was glad we did it. It was just to celebrate the engagement, not to get gifts.

No need to be paranoid.......just aware. : )
