Reading this makes me sick to my stomach!! How can we all afford to buy homes, never mind take a year or two off work to be with our children if we wanted to

It's crazy! The economy is definately not in our (middle class) favor!

Rach- when I bought my apartment I walked through everything w/ the bank/mortgage broker.
I did NOT think about any repairs or any emergency that would've/ could've happened. Well, it happened and I ended up putting in $10K of work into the apartment! Really listen to the inspection and see if there is anything under the sun that you guys will want to do. Maybe it's just re-doing the kitchen...... but that could be $10K itself, depending on what you wanted.
It's all confusing at first, but keep asking away. I've learned a new thing or 2 by reading this thread!

Irene -we haven't really started looking yet, but we are considering Commack, Smithtown, E. Northport, Kings Park etc. He is hell-bent on Commack but so is everyone else, so the housing prices are way up there. Mainly b/c the schools are so stellar. I try really hard not to lose hope, but it's hard. LI housing market is a nightmare.
