Re: Formal Attire: Did you say it on the invite?

I have been planning on using formal reception to follow, but wasn't sure people would get it, so I considered black tie optional. I think I am going to use formal reception to follow. I like the idea of formal attire but don't know how to word it so I am skipping that idea.

Re: Formal Attire: Did you say it on the invite?

I didnt write Black tie Option or Formal reception to follow I would say about 60% of the men wore tuxes anyway and those who did not wore dark suits. 2 of DH's cousins wore cocktail dresses which I thought was inappropriate, but most of the women wore gowns.
I think you know your guests best and if they wouldnt dress formally otherwise you should put 'formal reception ...'

Re: Formal Attire: Did you say it on the invite?

This is something that I've really been worried about. FI's family is all from OOT, so they aren't used to fancy weddings (he said that at the normal wedding where he is from they use disposable utensils and plates, etc) so I want to make sure that they know to wear suits, and gowns, but I don't want to make it black tie.

I like the Formal Reception following idea. I think that's what I may use.

Thanks for another great tip girls!

Fh didn't want to put people out so we skipped the Black Tie thing, but I did want to make it clear that our reception was going to be dressy, so I put 'Formal reception immediately following ceremony' on my invites.

I think this is a great idea!

Re: Formal Attire: Did you say it on the invite?

From a past bride I will say that you need to consider this: Will a guest NOT attend because they don't own or cannot afford your idea of 'formal' attire? Unless your Dad is a US Senator or something like that I think it is unfair to expect men to rent a tux for your wedding. I mean, you invite people to your wedding beause you love them and want to share a special day with you, not to make them dress a certain way. I think that 90% of people can and will dress perfectly for an affair, and those other 10%...well nothing you write on an invite will change how they show up anyway. I would hate to have someone not attend my wedding because they could not afford to go out and buy a new gown (or they don't already own one) and/or tux. JMO
