Especially since the groom was 'It's all bride's idea' and I'm guessing everyone made her feel bad enough that she caved ...
That was the exact attitude for BILs wedding, but his wife didn't cave.
Not only did people complain beforehand, but they complained throughout the wedding too. The whole tux thing was just so unnecessary.

Can I be your body double? I have a long dress, that I wore ocne to a wedding & was probabaly over dressed. I am waiting for an oportunity to wear it again, although I think it is a little small. Still too big for you though, I think.I think you should take Beth to marshalls as our personal shopper! She seems to have a knack for these things!
I would say tea length or or longer for black tie, but the 'optional' okays a shorter dress.
Being petite myself, I find that if I get a coctail dress in the misses ( not petites) department, it is automatically tea-length!

I just went to a black tie wedding last weekend where all of the men were in tuxes and I was actually very suprised to see most of the women in short dresses. Short is definitely fine.
And honestly, I may be in the minority here, but I don't think it's so bad for people to gripe a little about an added $150 expense/inconvenience.
I think black tie optional is fine, but I am one of those people that thinks black tie is just kind of rude. And I can point you to 100 wedding guests that agree.
I have to agree with you on this one. To me its like putting on an invitation that woman have to wear red dresses only. I don't think its fair to ask your guests to spend more money on what they are wearing. JMO of course.

Location of the wedding shouldnt matter. I know Oheka is fancy but it really doesnt matter. Black tie optional is just that. You can wear a gown or a cocktail dress as long as it isnt hoochie.

Re: Friday night wedding at Oheka
My wedding was black tie optional (Saturday night). Most (if not all) the men wore tuxedos. Most of the women wore floor length gowns but there were a few cocktail dresses. To be perfectly honest, that night I am not sure that I was actually aware of what one person wore, other than my wonderful DH and my bridal party. It wasn't until I saw my pics and video did I actually get to see that there actually were people at my wedding! The whole day was such a blur!I think as long as the dress is nice, you can get away with it. I always use to wear gowns but I have been leaning towards mid-length recently.
