Re: Garter and Bouquet toss question

Instead of having the man who catches the garter, just have the man keep itt, and not have to put the garter on whoever catches the bouquet. You dont have to do it the traditional way. We did something totally different.
This is your wedding, you can do it however way you choose.

Re: Garter and Bouquet toss question

I was at a wedding where I caught the boquet. It was quite embarassing to sit on the dance floor in front of everyone and have someone you don't know put a garter belt on you. I was drunk at that point though so I didn't mind too much. If I hadn't been though, and if I was conservative as you say your girlfriends, are I wouldn't dare do it and I'd be mortified. I'm not too conservative but I am shy...but after all was said and done it was quite funny especially to watch it on the video.

Re: Garter and Bouquet toss question

I could take it or leave it. I do not find it crude or distasteful.

My Fi wants to do it and since I donot have a huge problem with it we will do it.

Re: Garter and Bouquet toss question

My FH and I both agree that we are not doing this at our wedding. We like the anniversary dance, but don't want to do it b/c neither of us having both a living grandma and grandpa and that is who we would want to have it (the couple that will be married the longest are friends of FH's stepfather and I don't want to give it to them.) I'll either dedicate the bouquet to someone or just not do it. IMO its tacky to do the garter toss with sexual songs - maybe at the bachelor/bachelorette parties that is funny - but not in front of our relatives.

Re: Garter and Bouquet toss question

We opted not to do either the garter or bouquet toss -- I think that the entire garter thing is tacky.

And we opted not to do the bouquet thing kind of for the same reason and there weren't that many single ladies. And those who were single really wouldn't be all that into it. JMO

Re: Garter and Bouquet toss question

We are not doing the bouquet/garter toss. When we get married, my FIL's will be married 40 years, so we are having their wedding song played and have them dance to it. Then we are going to have my parents wedding song played and have them dance to it. After that, we are going to give each mother a bouquet and each father a garter.

Re: Garter and Bouquet toss question

I wasn't going to do either but now, I'm ONLY doing the bouquet toss and that's only because my reception hall has 45 foot high ceilings and I can throw the bouquet from the balcony, which I think will be cool..

Re: Garter and Bouquet toss question

Marcella - I went to a wedding in Oct where the bride threw the bouquet from a balcony and it was very nice! I would definitely do that and cut out the garter part!

Re: Garter and Bouquet toss question

If your friends would be uncomfortable having someone put a garter on their leg I would skip that part and just do the tosses. You know your guests and as a hostess you would never want to make anyone feel uncomfortable.

Re: Garter and Bouquet toss question

I'm also debating whether to do the boquet and garter toss because there will not be too many single people at our wedding. The anniversary dance is out because my parents are divorced, dad's remarried, but mom is still single (and will be going without a date). My mother suggested that I unravel the boquet and give a small bunch of flowers to each mother (my mom, my step-mom, and FI's mom) - of course, the bouquet would have to be made in such a way that it can be unraveled without a mess. Do you have any other ideas out there?

Re: Garter and Bouquet toss question

JulyBaby - you could get a break-away bouquet that is made to do exactly that - come apart to give to different people! Ask your florist about it.

Re: Garter and Bouquet toss question

I did not do either. Tell your FH that you will not subject one of your friends to an embarrasing and tasteless act in front of a 100 people. Why should a strange guy put his hand up a strange girl's leg? You can throw the bouquet but tell him you will do a 'private' garter removal for him afterwards

Re: Garter and Bouquet toss question

I cought the bouquet once as well. (Right before meeting FH) I was a date of my friends boyfriends brother- in other words, I only knew my friend. I got a kick out of it at the time, and the guy who caught the garter put it right under my knee. However, my FH totally hates the whole throwing of the bouquet & garter as well. He just thinks it's embarrassing- he's totally shy. So, if we do anything, it'll just be throwing the bouquet. I don't mind, I'd rather keep dancing + most of my friends are married.

Re: Garter and Bouquet toss question

We didn't do either, and I didn't miss it.

Mind you, I used to be the one rushing to catch to bouquet, but as I got older (not old, I'm 28), the tradition became less appealing. Especially as I saw how it affected others that were single and not happy about it.

Its different if you're single but dating someone, its mortfiying if you're single and longing for someone to be identified out on the dance floor as SINGLE.

Anyway, I've been to weddings where they did the bouquet and garter toss, but did not put the garter on the woman's leg. Most of the weddings I've been to in the last few years have not done this or have only done the bouquet toss.

Yes it can be fun and hilarious, but its certainly not elegant (and it takes away from dancing time).

Re: Garter and Bouquet toss question

I love the 'circle of love' idea. I don't plan on doing the bouquet and garter toss. I agree that it is tasteless and takes away from the elegance of the wedding - JMO.

Re: Garter and Bouquet toss question

I'm doing neither also. Most of my friends are married or engaged. I would have only 2 girls up to catch so I decided not too. At other weddings I have been to the bride just 'gives' the bo-k to the next girl to get married

Re: Garter and Bouquet toss question

Its all in your taste. Me personally I was the one that was out the nearest door when they would call all the single girls up even when my husband and I were dating!!! And for the reason of having to have some stranger put the garter on my leg. My husband always says if you catch it then I am going to have to catch the garter...just not something we were into so we didn't do the toss. You could do the toss and then not do the putting on the garter in the middle of the dance floor, I have seen people just have to dance together. It is all up to you!

Edited to say thank god we are married now, I don't have to go up or get called up anymore, now I need to go to a wedding!!!!
