I know this is an old thread, but we did this for our wedding. It was so helpful and worked out GREAT. We did get some quotes from hotels that were too far away, but it worked out for us!

If you or your fiance has any points with one of the major hotel chains, it will help.

We actually got a cheaper rate on our own than we did through hotel planner. The key was calling around to other hotels and getting competitive quotes. The rate they tell you is based on their occupancy rate. The earlier you book, the better because the occupancy rate will be lower. The hotel manager will be looking to boost that rate and might be willing to make a deal.

The rate we received for our block was more than $50 a night cheaper than what people paid at the last minute. (I nagged them to book by the deadline, but some didn't call until a few days before the wedding)
