Re: Hair and makeup trials are sooooo expensive!! (vent)
X, you should try to do trials with people who do trials for free. Okay, this probably means they'll charge $150-$200 for your makeup the day of if you book them, but to me, it's worth it b/c at least I didn't have to spend the money on a trial that I wasn't happy with. I'm planning on doing that because I am upset that I have gone on two trials and paid for them when I didn't like my make-up enough to book them. I plan on trying 2 people who give free trials. If you're interested, FM me for their info.

Am I the only one who thinks it's silly to use someone that you don't normally use? I mean, the girl who's cut and done my hair for YEARS, well, it just makes sense to use her for my wedding. No? I mean, I will go for a trial with her too, but it's not going to cost me a lot of money and I trust her. JMO.

I WISH I could use my hairdresser, however he works in Manhattan. He will cut my hair, but I'll need to find someone else to blow it out and style at the hotel where we will all be getting ready

To me, this is funny. Ladies, we spend so much time looking at dresses, flowers, colors, invitations. Put some effort into your hair and make-up. Research just like you researched everything else. All make-up artist are different, hairdresser's are different, before you sit in their chair and take their time up for you, see them before your appt. and ask to look at a portfolio. Look how she/he did someone's make-up that has your coloring, look at the detail, her/his pictures say a lot. Where have you gone anywhere and it was free? YOu have a choice. It's your choice that your spending YOUR money, make sure before- hand you at least know what type of work she does. Don't go to someone with a blindfold on. Especially because it can get costly if you keep going to just anyone. It's perception over reality. The more a make-up artist, hairdresser charges, the more we think 'she must be better' not necessarily true, but she/he is smarter!!! Look at their work before you hand them your money. If they do not have pictures of their work, then it's a risk of losing your money at your cost.Don't give up!! It is so important to feel beautiful on your day. I have so many pictures to show what I want. The people do not know you so familarize them with pictures of what you are looking for. If I show pictures and the girl does not give me what I showed her...I'm not paying her. If I go to her and say,' i don't know what i want'..I have to pay her no matter what she does.
I hope this helps you out, I did not mean to be annoying. I have been in so many bridal parties and disliked my make-up because the bride was fed up with trials and just picked someone.

I completely agree!!! I didn't go for many trials the first time, but I am afraid I might have to this time, since Elena cancelled. I can't afford this!!

I agree, but my hairstylist seems to think that 'natural' is the way to go.
Hes great for my day to day hair styles and was recently married and seems to think he knows best.
I want an updo. I have tons of hair that if I leave down becomes heavy, straight and sweaty. Since hes not willing to do this or will do it against his better judgement that doesnt make me confident and that leaves me no choice but to look elsewere.
I envy you who have hairstylists that can do day to day and special occasions by your request.

I appreciate your opinion, however, I am not normal.
I do not have the same color eyes, one is blue and one is brown. The optical illusion makes one eye look smaller than the other, droppy lid. There are no examples in any book or any reference that can come close to this. My complexion is light, and my hair is dark. My ethnic background is Indian and Spaniard and both show in my face.
The only real way to see how good they are, is to have a trial. Each face is different and has different properties.
I cant imagine spending an hour with a make up artist only to say I dont like it, I am not paying you. They spent the time, they warned me of the price, there is an obligation to pay.

By your picture, your beautiful and it looks like you do not have any make-up on. Your extrordinary, and very unique! I understand now how frustrating it may be. I take back saying, 'i think this is funny' I was supposed to delete that before I replied.Xelindrya, still, if you have pictures of the type of make-up you want and you are not given the look you asked for...she did not do her job that you asked for. No pay, no money! If she said let me suggest something else...you pay. You have to be satisfied that she gave you what you asked for. If she gave you what you wanted, BUT you don't like it, she gets paid. She did what you thought would look good. That's why I'm saying research for the 'look' you want. You have coloring like catherine-jetta-jones. She has Very dark hair, brown family eyes, and light skin. Get pictures of her. Or Angelina Joeli, blue eyes, dark hair, light skin. There is a book by Kevin Aucoin, Face Foward. Many pictures to chose from. I actually think the cover has a face of a women and one eye is light brown, the other dark brown, but the make-up is gorgeous. It matters how talented someone is when working with certain situations. Look at his book in Borders. So many pictures. Maybe this will help. Forget the cost right now. Look for something you are interested in having for your wedding. Then, locate a reasonable salon.

Re: Hair and makeup trials are sooooo expensive!! (vent)
I wish that the trial fee would go to the fee day of the wedding if you book, and I hate when the brides are more money. why??? its the same work!! I had my trial today... it was free...she refused to take a tip, and the fee is 65.00 dollars for her to come to me the day of the wedding. We dont have to get ripped off ladies. This is an example of that!

Sorry I can't 'forget the costs' My parents arent helping.. his parents arent helping.. he can't help and so the wedding expenses fall squarely on my shoulders. I wanted this wedding so I was willing to pay for it out of my pocket. But I am still watching every penny.
Thanks everyone for their thoughts and for letting me vent.. some stuff you just have to get off your chest!!

i think if you pay for a trial and you book them, they should either put that $ towards the day of fee... or give you a discount for day of!!!! such a ripoff!
(and not to mention those that charge the same amount for brides AND bridesmaids & moms for the day of!!! not right!!!)
i disagree - i've found that alot of makeup artists charge MORE for being the bride and thats not fair...
I'm referring to one person i had a trial with. She charged $100 for everyone... and thats not fair. nor is it the norm!!! I may tell her thats why shes losing my business.

Re: Hair and makeup trials are sooooo expensive!! (vent)
I think the trial should be really discounted and just a nominal fee so they know the brides are serious. If they are not coming to your house -then they can't cahrge that much!!!
I'm upset because the person who is supposed to do my hair (whom I have never met) said she doesn't want to do a trial until 4 weeks before the wedding.
What if I don't like it?
Then I'm really stuck

I guess I'm lucky! My makeup trial was free (although I paid $25 for airbrushing because that's anextra) and i loved it so i booked her. And my hair trial has a $25 fee that comes off of my bill when i booked her also.I only went to one person for each - hair and makeup and i booked them both!
sorry to everyone else out there having trouble!

NO NO.. you did the right thing.. I vent here cause it's nice to hear the sanity of thoughts when Im so angry sanity is not an option for me. I appreciate your comments. Im not the type to get cranky about people's opposite opinions to me. If I did then I shouldnt post, right?
By the way I booked those ladies tonight.. but like an idiot ... I was so happy I forgot to ask if the amount comes off the value of the day (although I doubt it does)

Call these ladies back. and just ask..it's early enough. If mostly everything is coming out of your pocket, you can ask anything you want to, even, over and over. I do hear good things about Cactus hair salons. I just got something in the mail regarding a wedding package if you book your wedding there, or ON location. It said to contact Dawn Atan at 516-932-1348. Does not hurt to call and ask prices. They have a website too. www.cactussalon.com Go to bridal services.Welcome New Vendors
