We will be going to Italy as well...we are trying to decide what areas we want to see as well...right now Tuscany, Florence, Venice are winning...we'll work out the details with the travel agent once we get to the hm booking part...since we'll probably be going for three weeks we decided to not do a tour. We figured we'll rent our own car and go see what we want to see when we want to see it. I have been to Italy before and know of alot of beautiful quaint and romantic 'little' towns that you would miss completely with a tour

If it's possible - try to get to the island of Capri, off the west coast (by Naples). I haven't been since I was little but my most vivid memories are of that incredible island.

I always travel with Club ABC tours. They're based out of NJ. My first trip in '94 to Italy was for 15 day for $1500 all southern italy with two meals a day included. I have since been back three times and cannot speak highly enough of it. Your tours are optional. You dont' HAVE to do them. Some are included in the price others are not. When I first went there was a doctor and his wife and they actually went off on their own by rail and met up later on in the tour. I would have loved to have gone back for my honeymoon but FH just want to veg out and drink margaritas and not go sightseeing. If you're looking for someplace quiet and relaxing you should go to Amalfi. Not much to do there but close enough that you can go to Sorrento and Capri if you want.

Can i ask? WHo is your travel agent? We are seriously talking Italy too... I keep going back and forth on the tour, no tour question. My FH's friend is from Italy and his advice was Take a Tour! He said, 'I speak the language and I would take a tour. You'll have a tough time seeing everything and knowing where you want to go'. I'm really conflicted.

I went to school in Italy for a summer so I was all over the place. Florence and Venice were my favorites, but I would also highly recommend Capri (even if it's just for a day or two) and Sorrento. I also liked Sienna. Rome was too much of a city for me. If you need any advice feel free to FM me.
