My mom does mine and it comes out awesome. Clairol frost and tip. It is like $15 for the kist and as long as you have someone to pull it through the cap, it never has failed me. I always get compliments and when I tell them it costs $15 they are in shock!

To be totally honest, when it comes to coloring your hair, I would pay the extra $ b/c you really do get what you pay for...a bad haircut can be fixed, but bad coloring can damage your hair AND look awful - much harder to fix. I am the first one to save $ where I can, but I will splurge on highlights b/c I trust my hairdresser who has a good reputation; although it is a bit expensive/

Re: How bad will it be to go to a Lemon Tree kinda place ...
I just save my money and don't even bother getting my hair colored .. seems like one hassle & expense I certainly don't need in my life. With that in mind, I obviously have no idea where to go or not go .. or what's expensive or not.
But I do think sometimes you can find gems in unlikely places .. there was a lady at a JC Penney salon who did a wonderful job cutting my hair for years .. then once while out of town, I was desparate for a trim .. and tried another JC Penney salon .. and had great success there, too.

i think it depends on who you get. i know someone who used to work at a lemon tree and she did great work and still does ( no loger there but still) and then you can go and get a bad hairdresser and it looks bad but i think you run that risk anywhere no?

I have been to Lemon Tree and Supercuts and got great cuts. Other the hand, I have been to Christies's in Bayside, and got a horrible cut!!

Not sure where you live, but I used to go to a place callee the palace in franklin square it was 50 bucks for highlight cut and blowdry, and they were great.
I got the worst cut of my life at the Palace, and I have been to Supercuts on more than one occasion.
If you go to the Palace, get a recommendation from someone. I know people who go there and love it and many others who had the same experience as I did.
I think they have a few good people who have a strong clientele, but people who are really not very good too.

Wendy there is a place in KP called Vasari that isn't cheap but not too bad either, I think it is about $50 for color, not sure about highlights.

I have to agree with the posters that say go to a reputable salon. Fixing a bad dye job can be more costly than the original and also damage your hair.I have very dark hair and I would not trust a box for my highlights. It's a very personal thing and I think working with someone with a lot of experience pays in the long run.
I do without some things in order to afford to go to the salon of my choice. That's important to me.
