Ia gree with the above posters - but as someone who never checks for this kinda of stuff b/c ov my overdraft, I would have no idea if I bounced a check.

Does overdraft prevent check bouncing ?

Yes, overdraft protection prevents from bounced checks...but up to a certain amount.

ie: overdraft protection up to 1K - if you write a check for 2K, and you only have 900K in the bank, they won't cover it, as you need 1.1K rather than 1K.

Hope that makes sense.

Thanks!

I agree with Ro...dont say anything...usually your bank will resubmit the check again to be paid...if not, hopefully the person who wrote you the check will realize it and either write you another check or they might even approach you about it...

I agree...

I wouldn't approach them about it. They're probably mortified, and approaching them about it will probably just make them feel worse. IMO, bringing it up just seems a little greedy to me. If they are decent people, they will do the right thing and write you another check. If not, $400 isn't really worth creating a very awkward situation over...

Re: How to handle bounced checks from wedding?

I think they would know if they bounced a check. I would wait to see if they send you another one, if not, I would probably just not say anything about it

Re: How to handle bounced checks from wedding?

This has happened in my family weddings also, and they waited to see if they noticed and would call.

They never did, and found out instead that it was not the first time it happened. But no one else in the family wanted to say anything to avoid embarrassing the offenders.

In that case, since it's habitual, I say the embarrassment should be theirs. Not yours.

We even have someone in the family who attended the reception but has not given a check at all, on at least two or three occasions. He cries poverty. Then why do you go in the first place?

He's not invited to my wedding, thank goodness.

So, are you telling us that the stress doesn't end once the wedding does?

Re: How to handle bounced checks from wedding?

I never understand this...FH's aunt once sent me a gift of $25 and it bounced!

I'd say nothing -- they'll definately get notification that their check bounced and surely be embarrased

Re: How to handle bounced checks from wedding?

While I agree to wait because they will be notified, I don't necesseraly agree on 'letting it go' and forgetting about it if they don't do anything about it. You are being charged for the bounced check. So that would mean that you invited them, you gave them food, they gave you a fake present and now you still have to pay to cover for it. Sorry! while they are so 'legitimate' reasons for the bounced checks (and people who are honest will fix it as soon as possible), apparently some people here have also experienced the other kind (the users!).

Re: How to handle bounced checks from wedding?

They might as well write a check and write on it, 'Save yourself 10 bucks... don't cash this'.

***** that not only do you NOT get the gift, but you have to PAY ten bucks!

I would let them know in a concerned fashion like 'Thank you for the generous gift, but I thought I should let you know to check with your bank because they will not clear it'

I totally agree...that is a good way of saying it.

Re: How to handle bounced checks from wedding?

I inadvertently did this once, and I can tell you, I nearly died of embarrassment! It was horrifying, especially b/c the check bounced b/c I apparently dont know how to add and it bounced by $1.58!
I dont normally keep a lot of money in my checking account and didnt have overdraft protection. I immediately called and apologized profusely and had them redeposit the check and covered their bank fee

Re: How to handle bounced checks from wedding?

I work in a bank and you would be amazed how many times I have seen this happen.....
The person who wrote you the check will get notified that the check has bounced.....
If this were me, I would nicely call the person and let them know.....Sometimes they don't even realize it....HTH

Wow! I am amazed at how often this happens!

oh yeah. i mean me myself, i wrote someone a check that bounced, but that was because i was overconfident with my direct deposit account . what happened was that they were two days late depositing anything because of the holidays (jerk).

Re: How to handle bounced checks from wedding?

We only had one bounce but the guest called us just before our bank told us. He said he made a mistake and drew money from the wrong account. He then deposited some money so that the check cleared on re-deposit. So, I guess we did okay.
