What a heartbreaking story. i am a true animal lover and hearing how you found this dog breaks my heart. It is hard to believe that the owners went so far as to put a chip in the dog, but is not actively looking for it or there is no further info. How wonderful of you to take this precious animal in. Good luck with finding a home.

I just wanted to wish you best of luck finding her a good home, she is a beautiful dog, we rent, othersie I would take her. I will ask around to see, I do have a girlfriend who was interetsed in a dog, but not sure whatever became of that. I ll find out tomorrow. How about placing ads at Vet offices?

That is the sweetest looking dog! You could try putting an add in the classifieds of Newsday... If we didn't already have a zoo here, I'd take her

Re: I am heartbroken over this..please read!
I had contacted them the first day people gave me suggestions and no one has gotten back to me.I have also contacted all the no kill shelters and not one is accepting dogs at this time. I never realized how many unwanted dogs there were out there. And this is the sad thing about this one, I do want her and I just cannot keep her.

Re: I am heartbroken over this..please read!
This happened to me the day before Easter. I found a stray with a collar on, but no tags (I actually posted a story similar to yours on LIW!) I also have two dogs (Hi, we lead parallel lives...) and couldn't find a home for the cutie, so I called the Islip Animal Shelter to pick her up. They told me that they rarely put pure breds down, and if they do, it would be after 3 years or more of living in the shelter. Because no no-kills would accept the dog, I agreed to put the dog in the shelter only if I could adopt the dog if the time ever came that they would put her down. I put signs up all over my neighborhood with the dog's picture and my cell number incase the owners were searching for her. Well, I'm happy she went to the shelter, because guess what???? The owners were smart enough to go there searching for her! She only spent a couple of hours at the shelter before her owners claimed her! I just knew it! I felt so weird keeping an animal that was so obviously somebody else's pet. (She knew how to sit, come, and give paw, and had a collar on!) I guess my point is that you should really do all that you can to find the owners of this dog before you give him away. And while I think a home is a better place for him to be than a shelter, the owners may be looking for him right now. If you keep him at your house any longer, you should put signs everywhere you can. People don't know that they should call their vets or shelters to report a missing dog. I'm so happy my story had a happy ending. I hope yours does too.

Re: I am heartbroken over this..please read! UPDATE..LAST PAGE!
Matron, so weird that you posted this right before I came to post my update. And we do live parallel lives huh?! The dog you found was beautiful by the way...Heres the update,
After calling and calling the home of the puppies I finally got someone who helped me. They tracked down the owner and told me her first name and cell number (all they could do legally) so I called right away. I got this guy, said they were from woodhaven and he gave me the run around. He said the dog was his cousins and she would call me back. She did about 2 hours later and told me she only had her for 1 week and then gave her to her nephews friend who lives in my neighborhood. Supposedly, they tied her outside of a supermarket and she got away. They thought she was stolen but never looked for her once. Not even on foot. This lady was very sweet and felt bad although it was not her fault. She is going to get in touch with these people and see what the story is and get back to me on Saturday but in all honesty, I dont think I am going to answer the phone again. I called everywhere looking for her owner, checked for fliers for 2 months and nothing. She was emaciated when we first got her and obviously wasnt well taken care of at all. I dont think these people were taking good care of her at all.
So now that I know the true story, it is my job to find her a loving home that she so deserves. Its a relief knowing where she came from though I must say. She is an exceptional animal who needs a loving family and these people were just not it!

Re: I am heartbroken over this..please read! UPDATE LAST PAGE!
So sad. I just asked my hubbie if we could take her in for a while and he said, 'No ... Next question...' Whaa. We're in the process of moving anyway. It would be too hard on the pup to keep moving her around. I'm so sad right now. Good thing is that you KNOW you'll find her a good home bc she's such a beautiful, loving cutie. I'll ask around for you. Definitely advertise....online and in the paper. Good luck! If I can be of any help, let me know. You are an awesome person.
