Just take a deep breath, change locks and enjoy your new apartment.I would just casually mention to him that someone used the machine

We did he said 'throw it out' Fh is going to call him today to ask if we can install cabinet knobs and replace the bathroom lighting fixture, I'm going to have him mention the laundry again and tell him we're concerned about who does and does not have access to the apartment.

Personally I would look for another apt. If this is how you are starting out with your landlord, I would hate to see how he is when you leave. He has aldready not done anything he said he would, there is someone using your apt. applicances and you have to put in the light fixtures. Sorry, but I would not spend my $$ on his apt. You will never see this money again. JMO. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Re: I HATE the landlord. (VENT)
yeah. the only thing is that the rent is pretty low and my cousin did the same thing, he put in all of the appliances and carpeting and all kinds of improvements paid for them himself, so the apartment really is nice, and it was worth the investment because he was living there for so long. If we lived in another apartment, we wouldn't have all of these appliances that only my cousin used (or so I thought....) and we wouldn't have a washer dryer at all and a private entrance, etc, etc. I think I just need to get over this hurdle.ETA: I also meant to say that the $$ we're spending to fix this place up is $$ that would go to rent elsewhere. And we inheritied a fairly new AC, fridge, washer/dryer and some furniture that my cuz left for us, so it'll hopefully be worth it once we're settled in

Re: I HATE the landlord. (VENT)
If the rent is pretty low, I can understand the landlord dragging his heels as far as making everything really clean. It is a pain in the a** to have to do things yourself but you also don't want to get on your landlord's bad side. I'm sure that you can change the lock but just give the landlord a copy of the key. Did you and your FI go over the apartment with the landlord before you moved in and specified things that you wanted to have done or did he say that the apartment is 'as is.' If you gave the landlord the bills or took it off of your rent I think he would be pissed and might find someone else to move in. When my FI and I moved into our apartment the rugs had stains all over them and other such and I was pissed that I had to have them cleaned, but we too were getting the place for lower than market value. Good Luck and I hope you don't have any more problems.

Re: I HATE the landlord. (VENT)
you should not be moving into a place you find dirty. even though the rent is low, when you FIRST move in, he should have it cleaned etc. thats ridiculous! expecially the carpets. youd be surprised when steaming them how much dirt comes out of them! I would make a note of what it looks like so when you eventually move out, you dont get stuck with paying.. did you leave a security?

Re: I HATE the landlord. (VENT)
I'm going to ask about changing the regular lock and not the expensive multilock thing. I'm sue he'll let us do it. it's a matter of a doorknob and it'll cost him nothing. We did leave a security deposit. I'm going to save these cleaning bills to make sure we get it back. And we WERE told that the carpets would be cleaned and the rug fixed, specifically. Oh well.
