Teri, I think it's a cute idea! My best friend is having a baby in a few weeks and for her shower I bought her over $200 worth of children's books! She's one of my oldest friends and we were always such bookworms growing up. Plus, we always said we wanted to write a children's book together. So I bought a whole bunch and put them in a nice basket... she could barely lift it, but I think she was really happy!

Don't forget to get something by Shel Silverstein (thus, my avatar!)

Very cute idea on the basket! I swear, I can't wait for more of my friends to start having babies - I have SO many good ideas for shower things

What are some good books by S. Silverstein? I can't think of ANY right now but remember reading them when I was little.

Where the Sidewalk Ends, A Light in the Attic, The Giving Tree, and The Missing Piece are a few good ones. Where the Sidewalk ends is my favorite... my avatar comes from the poem 'Hug O' War', which you can read if you click on my profile name

I don't think I ever read the Giving Tree but have definitely heard about it.

definitely get 'The Giving Tree' It is one of my all time favorite books!

I don't really remember many others, except 'Where the Wild Things Are' 'Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs' 'Corduroy' and 'Animals should definitely not wear clothing'

How could I forget?! Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs was one of my favorite books as a child!!! I LOVED that one! Remember that peanut butter and jelly sailboat?!

I dont think its tacky! I plan on doing it. I have been collecting books for my future children for about 5 years now! Guess you can say I couldnt wait for this day!

NO and as a future teacher I think you MUST register for them it is so important to read aloud to your kids, there is so much info online about this search for 'read aloud' or the 'read aloud method'' and you will see!

Definitely not tacky!!! I think books are the greatest gifts you can give...my daughter would pass up just about any toy to have her mom or dad read to her!
