maitre d'...what do they do???

Glory,

They coordinate the whole affair + do all the things you mentioned. Believe me, they are well worth the money. If he doesn't do the job well, the whole thing can fall apart, all your plans will be for naught, + you could be upset the whole time.

I've attended events where either there wasn't a maitre'd (home, catered) or they didn't do the job. I had to step in + coordinate everyone so that the bride + groom wouldn't know that anything is missing.

maitre d'...what do they do???

The maitre d' is there to make sure everything from the hall's perspective runs smoothly. This includes the wait staff, the kitchen, sometimes the vendors (they can direct the vendors as to when the food is being served, etc).

I used to work in a hall, and for the most part the people who serve are teenagers and young adults. I think the feeling is to have one person be in charge to make sure that everyone does their job, and in case anything goes wrong to have someone there to make a quick decision.

Another thing is that the maitre d' is there to serve the bride, groom and parents of both. Knowing that this is also a "tipped" job, they will treat everyone like gold, and hopefully provide anything that is asked for.

maitre d'...what do they do???

Glory: My hall told me that the tip for the Maitre' De should be 1.00 per head. That is average and the fair going rate. Do you have 400 guests. We were not told to give anything. We were told that Etiquette states 1.00 per head is appropriate.

Is it appropriate to tip BEFORE? Do service people expect/prefer that?

I am a bit confused about tipping in general. It seems some of my vendors have gratuity included (Limo, waitstaff/bartenders). I guess I just have to tip the maitre d', bridal attendant, DJ. I assumed I didnt have to tip photographer & video since they are both the owners of their business.

Tell them that you have checked around and spoken to other brides and that 1.00 per head is the going price.

maitre d'...what do they do???

HI!! My hall told us not to feel obligated to tip but if we did tip $2 per person at the wedding if we feel the maitre d' did a great job. They left it really up to us. So far the maitr d' has been very nice and helpful sooooo I am opting to tip a bit higher. Let me know what they say!!!

What are churches charging for a wedding???

maitre d'...what do they do???

Concetta,

The maitre d' (Steve) at TimberPoint is awesome. He took care of everything for us and the whole night went so smoothly. Just an example of his service:

Steve saw that the bar was running out of Amstel Light(we ordered bottles of Amstel and Bass plus having Bud on tap) so he put a six pack aside and told the bartenders that it was only for the bride because he knew that was what I was drinking!

Steve/Timber Point Thats my hall too

Hi Kathy. Please fill me in. I am having my reception at Timber Point in October. Tell me how everything was - even the bad. Steve has always been very helpful when I have called or popped in. Thanks!!! I love the place and the people there have been so nice so far. Hope to hear from you soon.

Thanks, Lisa

Thankfully, I have encountered nicer staff the past 2 times I was there. Maybe I had previously 'caught them on a bad day'. They also did a wonderful job on my bridesmaids dresses.

maitre d'...what do they do???

DO YOU FIND OUT BEFORE YOUR WEDDING WHO YOUR MAITR D' WILL BE?? I STILL HAVE 4 MONTHS, SHOULD I ASK OR REQUEST SOMEONE THAT I HAVE DEALT WITH AT MY HALL?? THANKS.

Tips should be handled by the hosts, not the guests.

So are the bartenders usually covered by the gratuity we pay the reception hall?

maitre d' assignments

My wedding is on the 25th & I still don't know.

I asked Tiffany @ the Milleridge and she told me that the assignments are done the week of...then she meets with them to review the program for the affair (i'll be meeting w/her prior)

I'd imagine you could submit a request if you have someone you've dealt w/before.... seems reasonable to me! : )
