When I say putting his wife and kid life in danger I meant , he knew that he was gay. But lived a double life engaging in extramarital sex with partners that could possibly have an illness or disease that trusting wife at home could have caught and passed on unknowingly to thier child. This happens so often..Cheating comes with bigger risks than alot of people realize.

Can I get political for a second? There are politicians and even world leaders that have done horrendous acts. We're talking corruption, assasinations, bombings, and much worse!!!! This poor guys has a tryst with another guy and he resigns? Even the fact that he was honest about it and didnt bow down (no pun intended) to the blackmailers show show how honest he is. It really is a shame.

that i could understand....but as it is now...they're making it sound like he's resigning because he's gay.....and that really bugs me!

why would his being gay or having an affair reflect badly on his politics?

sexual harassment, that's another story!

All any of us are hearing initially is that McGreevey resigned because he is gay... that is just a stupid way that the news agencies are posting it .. so he says he's not resigning BECAUSE he is GAY, he CLAIMS he is resigning due to his infidelities... (which isn't the entire truth either, if the sexual harrassment claims hold up)

my entire point being that I don't like that they are saying he is resigning because he is GAY .. that's all any of us are hearing off the bad. And that just seems hurtful to the gay community in general

I didn't mean to sound like a jerk but I didn't like hearing the story spread around my stupid officemates as 'wow, he's resigning b/c he's gay.' I kept getting bits and pieces of the story and was sure there was more to it than what I intiially heard

I think it is not just one issue. They are all relevant issues as to why he is resigning.

Being gay in politics can hurt some individuals. Sad but very true.

I totally understand. I saw the conference and McGreevey was rather vauge himself. I think everyone , journalists included, just did not know what to make of what they had just heard/witnessed.

I feel for him and his family. Most of my friends are gay. I have heard the stories of the difficulties. I actually went with one of my friends to his parents house for Thanksgiving as support for him to come out to his family. He was 25 yrs old. The doubt and fear are overwhelming in normal circumstances, but to have your hand forced must be awful. I just hope that he and his family are okay.

He was also quite the topic of controversy. I don't think this only has to do with him being gay:

New York-WABC, August 12, 2004) — When elected, Governor James McGreevey was supposed to be the young bright hope for New Jersey. But his administration has labored under scandals almost from the start.

His nominee for police superintendent, Joseph Santiago, had a criminal record for assault and was forced to step aside.

McGreevey's unusual choice to coordinate New Jersey's anti-terrorism efforts, Golan Cipel, was ineligible because he wasn't an American citizen -- he's Israeli.

And more recently, McGreevey was tainted by another scandal. His top fund raiser, Charles Kushner, who almost became the Port Authority chief was indicted, accused of secretly hiring prostitutes to video-tape and embarrass a witness in an ongoing campaign finance investigation.

While McGreevey himself was not indicted, he was implicated in that case for using the code word 'Machiavelli.' That word was established by undercover federal investigators to signal his complicity in a scheme to extort campaign money in exchange for help in a land dispute.

At times, the state's budget crisis took a back seat to all the scandals. And at the recent democratic convention in Boston, reporters almost avoided McGreevey.
