JennRenee

I will not flame you but you wrote:

My DH is a cop, and I'd rather he make that tragic mistake than take a second longer to think about it and be killed. JMO, flame me if you'd like.

If you were a relative of the person on the other end of the tragic mistake you would feel differently. Like I said I believe that this was a mistake, but there has to be some standard of care so that innocent people are not killed.

What do you mean standard of care? I dont get that? Innocent people will always get killed, unfortunately its the way of the world nowadays.

I would also just like to add that the media doesn't tell people that it is illegal to be on those roof tops...they also fail to mention that there are bullet holes on the exit doors because people go up there and use the doors for target practice, they also leave out that there are shell casings all over the floor. So why the hell shouldn't police officers have their guns out. I'm not in anyway saying that that teenager deserved to be shot....I'm just saying that people need to give police officers more respect and understand the type job they have. They leave their homes and families everyday and put their lives on the line and as soon as something unfortunate happens they are looked at as criminals....what about all the good they do the other 364 days of the year.

Jenn I'm with ya on that

Steve works in Bed-Sty and I can't begin to tell you the stories of the things he is faced with and that is just being a firefighter.

Amen. It is really shameful how much stuff is left out of the story. In all honesty the kid should not have been on that rooftop at all. I don't believe he deserved to be shot, at all, but if he was not breaking the law by being up there we would not be here discussing this at all.

Re: Not indicting the police officer who killed Stansbury...anyone hear about this?

It is an unfortunate situation, and I feel as though he did what he thought was right he was startled unfortunately the world we live in is unsafe and it is unfortunate that cops need to fear there life on an evryday basis. He was found not guilty so it isn't considered a scre up it is considered a mistake and there is no reason he should not receive his pension and salary

If the kid wasn't engaged in illegal or mischevious behavior, they wouldn't have put themselves at risk.

Very well said! I was trying to thinkof a nice way to say the same thing. Thank you.

Re: Not indicting the police officer who killed Stansbury...anyone hear about this?

I think the whole thing is plain sad. A young boy lost his life for no reason. I am not saying the cop meant to kill someone but when you hold a gun you must use your witts much better than the rest of us. You are held to a higher standard of care IMO.
There are no words to justify this lose of life. It is just plain stupidity.

Re: Not indicting the police officer who killed Stansbury...anyone hear about this?

Stupidity on whose part Michele?

Police officers are human beings as well. This officer has been on the force for over 10 years with a clean record and has never fired his gun before this incident. Does that not stand for anything at all?

Using your wits is one thing but I am sorry, he is a man just like any other man. He fears, he feels and if he feels that his life is in danger in some way then he feels he needs to protect it.

Re: Not indicting the police officer who killed Stansbury...anyone hear about this?

On another note..to add to what other ladies have said..no it wasnt a reason for him to be killed but why was he on the roof in the first place?

I have a 16 year old brother who doesnt live in the best of neighborhoods but we all break our backs teaching him to do the right thing all the time. In no way would he put himself in a position where he shouldnt be. Police officers do not just go around shooting people on rooftops or else you would hear about it every day but guess what...every day police officers are on rooftops keeping other people safe. As Karen has said...do not do things that put you at risk..dont carry things that you shouldnt be carrying..no matter what. He was obviously in a situation that he shouldnt have been in at all. Not to say that this makes it less tragic for the boys family but no one should say (in this particular situation) that the cop was just being careless with his gun or that cops in general shouldnt have their guns out while patrolling rooftops..how would you feel if it were your loved one on those roofs?? Yes they were BOTH at fault but no one seems to be saying that about the boy.

Of course people aren't going to mention that the kid could of possible been wrong. COPS will forever be depicted in a bad light ....... but they are the first that everyone calls when they need help!

Re: Not indicting the police officer who killed Stansbury...anyone hear about this?

As a police officer's wife, I know what my husband deals with everyday on the job. It isnt the easiest job in the world, as some people who DONT have family on the force wouldnt know. Nobody can say unless they have been closely surrounded by someone on the force.

Michele, what did you mean? I didnt follow this whole story, but it is hard for me to call a police officer having stupidity for mistakenly shooting someone. When there is that split second decision and your life is on the line due to the job you hold, you make the best decision possible.
