Re: NWR: Help with my dog!!

I have four chihuahua's and my last one was a biter 2/chewing my walls.... U can use the bitter apple (my dog loved it) so that didnt work I landed up buying a cage (not a crate) actually I got it at babies r us ~ has no roof and keeping the puppy in this area while you are not at home with some food and water.

http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/NavResults.cfm?N=2001+114011

something similar to this one! and leave lots of chewy toys and teething items! your puppy is a baby and is teething ~ losing its baby teeth!

Good Luck!

OK, I need to preface this by saying that our puppy is a GREAT dog. She doesn't bite, doesn't bark, isn't hyperactive, is very friendly AND most of all: when she does something WRONG and we see her-- we correct her with a can of coins and she NEVER does it again. She's very good about listening, BUT:

That brings me to my problem: she has been chewing on the bottom of the kitchen table's chairs and ripping the paper off the bottom of the chair (underneath where you sit)... and we have yet to CATCH her doing it so she doesn't understand (we are assuming) that what she is doing is wrong. We don't know what to do. We bought bitter apple and sprayed it which did not seem to work b/c she did it again this morning.

What do we do?? Any suggestions-- beat her?? HELP!!

The bitter apple does nothing. Have you tried a cage while you are not home. That helps in training, but for the chewing on furniture you really need to catch her in the act. Try leaving chew toys and bones for her to chew on because she is probably teething. If that still doesn't work do the smart thing that I wish I had done and that is to take her to a professional trainer and have it done the right way. They will teach you exactly how to handle her.
Good luck

Re: NWR: Help with my dog!!

When we first got our dog, we blocked off the entrance to the kitchen when no one was home and kept him in there.

Whenever someone came home he would be peeking through the side all excited, and it was as if someone gave him an energy boost or something because he would be running around, playing, etc. but we stopped doing that after a couple of months, I never had him have a chewing problem with furniture, maybe just theoccasional flip flop

Thanks so much Mamma Nina&Peter!!!! She is great in every other way and we thought we didn't need a trainer for her up until now-- so, after this we may get one just for her 'really bad habits'. She is good in other ways so I can't knock her too much. Hopefully, this will be her one bad habit!!

Re: NWR: Help with my dog!!

I don't have a dog, so I don't know how much help I can be, but I heard that vinegar works better than the bitter apple, which supposedly doesn't work at all. But then again, do you want to be spraying your chairs with vinegar?! Sorry I can't be more help, but good luck!

You won't regret it because I can tell you from experience it does help to have them trained the proper way. Our dog, who is a 104 lb german shepard thinks she owns the house. Last week (this is not the first time) she scratched through the doors on my closet to get in while we were both out at work and destroyed everything that she could get her teeth into. Thank God she didn't get my coach bags or she would have been mince meat, but she made a mess and now I have to have someone come in and put in new doors. We now put her penned up in the basement so she can't do anymore damage.
Otherwise she is real friendly, but right now she better stay away from me.

If she would have touched my bags(1 of them was a gift from Peter & Nina too) or bit up my shoes there would have been no controlling me. She is just lucky that my husband, Gary, got home first and cleaned up most of it before I got home. The last time she did it she destroyed a Louis Vuitton bag that I got as a birthday gift. If she had been professionally trained she more than likely wouldn't do any of that.

THAT'S EXACTLY WHY SHE IS NOT ALLOWED IN THE HOUSE ALONE ANY LONGER. THE BASEMENT IS NOW HER HOME AWAY FROM HOME AND IF SHE DOES SOMETHING DOWN THERE THAT'S THE END!!!!!!!

i never knew shaking coins made dogs stop doing something..you learn something new every day...

maybe shake the cans next to the chairs while she's watching? I have no idea...sorry!

OMG the cans work like a charm!! (Maybe every dog is different b/c I cannot see a pitbull being afraid of the noise from coins lol) but Char is terrified of the thing. She sees it sitting on the counter and she will start to back up and shake! One time I had to pick her up and I needed to take the can with me so I picked it up in another hand and it just happened to brush up against her body-- holy crap she went nuts and jumped OUT of my arms and ran away!! LOL! She acts like we beat her with it daily.

BUT the only problem is I have never caught her in the act of THIS-- so it's hard. I tried shaking it after the fact but she just looked at me like huh? what am I doing wrong?!

GUYS!!! Your not supposed to shake the can at the dog. You are supposed to put the can behind your back and shake it as you say 'NO!!!' This way they are afraid of you not an object. It's supposed to project your voice. I have 13 years experience so I'm not just yapping here. (Get it? Yapping here? No- I guess it wasn't that funny!)
