Re: NWR: FERRETS??

We had two ferrets, I think both were Marshall. We rescued them from someone who wasn't taking very good care of them. The first one that passed away they never did actually diagnose the cause, although I think it was some type of cancer. The other one had pancreatic cancer. We had to give it pediapred every 12 hours to keep it going and it would have the most horrible seizures. The problem is that there is no REAL vet care for these animals. Even those who say they specialize in the exotics seem to be just guessing when they treat these illnesses. They are so cute though and if you take proper care of them you get the rewards back tenfold!!

I agree with Smiley on the cuteness. Her ferrets were adorable

Re: NWR: FERRETS??

If at some point you end up looking for a really good vet for ferrets, Dr. Horowitz from the Massapequa Pet Vet is highly recommended (even by the ferret clubs). My FH has taken his ferrets to him in the years past and we took our little ones to him since they were born till the day we had to put them both to sleep 9 years later due to cancer. When Bruno started to drink a lot of water and loose a lot of weight they actually diagnosed him as diabetic. Unfortunately, cancer overtook them both in the end. He is an excellent doctor and really knows what he is doing with ferrets.

They are such wonderful animals, so full of personality.

Re: NWR: PICS OF OUR NEW ADDITIONS-FERRETS!!! Update:

Awww, they look so cute!! Cupcake looks a lot like my old ferret, Bandit Just a word of advice--make sure that when you give them a bath, you don't get water in their ears and it's best to use a special shampoo for ferrets. Otherwise, it can dry out their coats and make them very itchy. Good luck!!

Re: NWR: PICS OF OUR NEW ADDITIONS-FERRETS!!! Update:

Aaawww!!! I miss my ferrets! My DH and I had 4 of them. All boys... Bud, Taz, Molson and Bailey. We absolutely loved them! We taught them how to kiss, do tricks, etc. They were such a big part of our lives. We started out with 1, then we got another, then another, etc. We ended up with the 5.5 ft tall cage with tubes and hammocks. They have all passed on. We had each of them for 8 years. They don't live longer than that usually. I wish we could get more, but now we have 2 dogs, and after seeing how they caught a rabbit, and killed it, I couldn't take a chance like that happening to a ferret. It's not that dogs don't get along with ferrets, it's just these dogs. They've never been around them when they were pups so they don't know any better. We had the ferrets when we had our other dog, but we first got the dog when he was 6 weeks old, so he grew up with them, and wouldn't hurt them. Anyway, take good care of them and love them like family members! They need a lot of attention. We even took our's back and forth from NC and LI on the plane. They even got to ride in the cabin with us!

Why are they illegal in NYC?

According to the NYC Dept of Health:
'Ferrets are known for their unpredictable behavior, and they are prone to vicious, unprovoked attacks on humans. Ferret attacks reported nationwide over time have become notorious for their severity and capriciousness, causing serious injuries to some infants and young children in particular. In New York City's multiple dwelling residences, which are not natural habitats of ferrets, a ferret could crawl through holes in walls or travel along risers or ducts to other apartments, with potentially tragic consequences for the neighbor of a ferret owner.'
-New York City Department of Health, Office of External Affairs

So, then I guess with all the pit bull attacks in the recent years, by this reasoning they should be illegal as well as keeping hamsters as pets, right? I think the logic behind the ferret ban is pretty flawed personally.

I am missing my babies so much when looking at your Little Angels. They are the exact coloration as my Dulce and Bruno. FH and I enjoyed their company for almost 9 years. Enjoy them for they have so much personality and affection. Just watch your socks, they have a habit of disappearing
