I'm so sorry to hear about Max. I also get very upset when a pet gets very ill. They are part of the family and mean a great deal to us.
Pets do tend to take off to be alone when they aren't feeling well. Don't feel responsible for him being ill. Its not your fault. He was feeling ill and went to be alone somewhere.
They say that when a bird poops on you,it is good luck. Seems like it is working already. Hope Max is back home with you asap.
