I have a platinum e-ring and a white gold wedding band. For me, price was an issue. The prices of gold and platinum have sky rocketed, and platinum is really expensive these days. There are certainly some advantages to platinum. For 1, it is a pure white gold, which means that it will never change color. White gold on the other hand, is yellow gold that is dipped in rhodium to make it white. After a while, it will turn yellowish. You can have it re-dipped and it will be fine, but you will never have to re-dip platinum. Also, a major advantage to platinum is that you dont lose metal when you scratch it. When it is scratched, the metal simply moves aside. With gold, when it is scratched, you lose metal. Its definately better to have platinum. It is an extremely strong metal, so you wont have to worry about losing the diamonds in a setting or anything like that. In fact, mose diamonds are set in platinum, even if the rest of the ring is gold.

Platinum is NOT 'pure white gold'. That's a contradiction. Platinum is platinum, a metal, an element, its own substance. But yes, it is 'white-ish' in its natural form (it's closer to gray though).

Gold is yellow and has alloys added to it to make it white, rose, green, etc.

I'm sorry- I messed that up- I didnt mean to say that it was 'pure white gold'- that was typo! Sorry!

No need to apologize! I just really want you girls to be educated so that the jewelers don't scam you. Not all are reputable!!

They look different colors and white gold needs to be dipped after time.

my e-ring is platinum and the w-ring is in white gold.

the white gold does get a little yellow-i take them both to a jeweler once a year and get them both cleaned and dipped since the platinum gets dull and stratched.

I got the white gold because it was way cheaper than platinum and we were spending a ton of moolah on the wedding..

I really don't regret it.

ditto

here is a picture of my rings....can you tell the difference?

My personal preference...(lets keep in mind this is my personal honest opinion...)
I completely think you should get platinum. DH & I also had money problems being we paid (and are still...) for the wedding ourselves, BUT one very important piece of advice that I got from this site is your rings are not something to 'skimp' on. These are one of the few items you'll have forever. Sure...so we had to put it on our credit cards and are paying it off, but you know what...we got what we wanted and in our minds a few dollars we would have saved by getting white gold wasn't worth it.

Lori, I couldnt agree with you more. It's one thing if you would prefer your band to be white gold. But if its because of your budget, I would try to find a way to cut back on something else. You will be wearing your wedding band for life and even if you decide to upgrade later, I can guarantee you that when the time comes you will not want to part with the ring you have such sentimental value with. This is the ring he will slip on your finger when he recites his vows. This is the ring that will symbolize your love. And this is the ring that you'll look down at when you need to be reminded of your love. So think twice before you skimp on your band and lavish on something that will you will only remember on you wedding day.

Re: Platinum e-ring and white gold wedding band?

I actually have the opposite - I have a white gold e ring and a platinum wedding band. I didnt plan it that way - the band matched exactly and it was priced right. They look ALMOST exactly the same, although I do feel like sometimes my e-ring has a yellow tint to it.

Re: Platinum e-ring and white gold wedding band?

I didnt read the other posts but i do want to point out that white gold can turn yellowish.

I have a white gold ring that has definetly tarnished with age. I never really noticed it until I put it next to my platinum ring.

You could always re-dip the ring but that could become a pain.

Hope that helps

Re: Platinum e-ring and white gold wedding band?

Hi Girls - I had debated over this as well. In the end I bought platinum to match my engagement ring. When I was told I would have to dip my ring 1 to 2 times a year at $25 dollars a pop - the extra $400 to get platinum seemed worth it. Over the long run it is actually cheaper and I did not have to worry about anything looking different.

Re: Platinum e-ring and white gold wedding band?

Thanks so much for all the advice, by the way. I really appreciate it. I have some time so I'll give it some thought but all your advice really helps. Hope this helps out some of the other ladies too! Thanks again.
