Plus Size Wedding Gowns

Hi everyone and CONGRATS!! Most of us at this site are brides to be! I have a question for ya! I am a plus size bride to be and am wondering if anyone knows a place to go where there are plus sizes to try on. Most places do not stock much in plus sizes. I've been to David's Bridal and saw a few things. I am even making a trip to Pa to Bridaltown to see what they have. Any other ideas?

i'm having my reception at the thatched cottage. i didn't really look at many other places because i have been to other events there and i really like what they had to offer. the only problem that i have had is the fact that the upstairs reception hall (which is the better place to have the reception) can only hold up to 185 people, but i was told that i really shouldn't have more then 170, if i want to keep it comfortable. the food is excellent and the presentation is beautiful! the only thing that could cause a problem is if it is low tide during your cocktail hour. the cocktail hour is downstairs, on the water, and if it is low tide, it can make for an unpleasant hour! so check the tides before you decide on a date.

Best of luck with your upcoming wedding!

I've seen a few ads for Alfred Angelo (i think that's the designer) that run in Plus Sizes....I think JC Penny carries them as well as David's Bridal.

If I were you, I'd pour over a few bridal magazines, find dresses that you like (many will be noted in the magazine if they come in plus sizes), and then find the nearest authorized bridal shop for that designer.

You can also find sizing info from many designer web pages as well.

Ann-Marie, I am also a plus size bride. Unfortunately based on what I have found David’s has the largest selection of plus size dresses for you to try on. All of then can order it in your size, but if you are like I was, if I can not get into it, I did not want to order it. Most stores have 5 or 6 plus size dresses and that is about it. I bought mine at the Wedding Plaza in Baldwin, if you are interested I can give you the number. I also went to Adrienne's but keep in mind that they both only have a few, I was just fortunate enough to find what I wanted. I went to one other store out east that had dresses, when I remember the name I will post it! Feel free to email me privately also, I am sure that I might have some more answers to other plus size needs that you might have...Good luck, this industry just has not fully accepted us yet

Hi Ann-Marie,

I'm also a plus-size bride, and David's is probably your best bet unless you don't mind ordering a gown that someone held up in front of you because they only had the sample in a size 10! Adrienne's in Islip and Lillette's in Baldwin also have a selection of plus-size gowns. Good luck with your gown search!!

Thanks so much guys. This is a great place to get info. If anyone else has any suggestions, please let me know

Consider buying a few rolls of film for your friends/family who are going to bring their cameras anyway......When you return from your honeymoon, take the film to those "free 2nd set of prints" places. That way you'll each have a full set.

And with today's new technology, a CD with your pix is only a few dollars more - and you can email your friends with the photos! : )

Hey there. I went to Klinefelds in Brooklyn yesterday. I was very impressed with them in general. They have an awsome selection of gowns and the service is amazing. I just alled to ask if they carry plus sizes and they said they have some. It may be worth a try. Their # is 718-765-8500. They may have something you won't see at David's. Good luck.

Take a look in some inexpected places...not all bridal supplies have to be in a bridal store!

I just want to say "YOU GO GIRLS"!!!! Most WOMEN are so concerned with losing weight (myself included) that we forget to focus on the big picture. I admire that you have accepted yourselves and to heck with "society"

thank you so much for all the input. I didn't like the crest hollow too much, i felt like i was inn a hotel or a wedding factory. i thought the prices were a little more reasonable at the fox hollow. i am definatley gonna check out the sandcastle. does anyone know what their new garden area looks like? I was hoping to get married the first week of november 2001. i keep thinking that march and february are too cold, eventhough the prices are much cheaper. thanks again for sharing!

Good Luck!

Ann Marie-

This past Saturday I just went to Bridaltown in PA and bought my dress. I didnt think I would find one right away but I went home with a dress I love, that didnt cost me a fortune. What a difference this experience was!! I hated trying on dresses in a sample size that didn't fit me, but here they show you the section of your size and you only try those on. I found 4 dresses that I was torn between and felt so good when trying them on!!! The dresses are priced really good and if you have the dress shipped to your house in NY you dont pay sales tax! Otherwise if you take it home that day it is still only 6% sales tax. Bridaltown I thought was definately worth the ride. Now I have my dress and I dont have to worry about it coming in on time and wondering what a dress will look like in my size. I definately suggest you try there. There is also another place in PA I almost tried and it is called Bridal Factory Wearhouse. Look at their website also Bridaltown has a website (DO a search for both names) The Bridal Factory Wearhouse says that all their dresses are $299-699 in price and they stock all sizes. GOOD LUCK!!!

Bring your appetite! The cocktail hour is very lavish and during the reception, you have a choice of entrees, or you can sample all of them! Never heard of a place that will offer guests seconds of their entree! Just expect to pay for this. I negoitated a better rate by having a daytime wedding and he knocked off an additional $3/person...which with 185 guests is a savings of $555!

Ann Marie, I got my dress at Bridal garden in Bethpage. Although I didn't try the dress on in my size at first, they made me feel like a size 8! (which I am not )The designer to check out is Alfred Angelo, the gowns are flattering! Try on A-line dresses, that made me look like I had no waist!! Good luck!

What is everyone's opinion about sending out "save the date" cards? Has anyone done this; when is an appropriate time to do so? Any info would be helpful. Thank you and good luck to everyone!

Today we pause to reflect upon those who have shaped our character, molded our spirits and touched our hearts. May the lighting of this candle be a reminder of the memories we have shared, a representation of the everlasting impact you have made upon our lives.

THanks Christine. I did however already find my dress. I went to Bridaltown in Pa. They had a big selection of Plus Sizes to try on. I must have tried on 8 or 9 gowns before selecting my dress. It was definitely worth the trip.

Everyone has encountered the reception hall that won't take credit cards..and we've all been saving for that several thousand dollar CASH payment.

Considering most guests will cover their plates (on average - some more, some less)...that money will only be out of your pocket for a few days. (until the checks clear).

Ann-Marie-

I am so happy you found your dress! Wasn't shopping there a good experience? It is such a good feeling to actually see what the dress will look like on you, right?

Thanks for the explaination!!!

Lori Yes it was great. I was able to try on 8 or 9 dresses and had narrowed it dowm to 3. From the last 3 I could not choose. I loved them all equally. They were 3 very different dresses. I asked my FMIL and the sales lady to help make the final decision. It was by far definitely worth the trip. To actually get to see the dresses on me and not order from a picture and hope it looks good on me. I would suggest thagt anyone in this situation do the same.

Almaz Brothers: 35-13 30th Avenue. Phone is 718-545-6073. They're open every day but Saturday. Its owned by 2 brothers - Ralph and Yury (Ralph is the guy you'll be dealing with - Yuri is the ring maker guy in the back). Ralph is a sweetie : ) They've been in business since '84.

Good luck! : )

I agree. I was nervous looking for dresses because I thought that I was only going to be able to try on a size 4. I went to Adriennes in W. Islip. They have dresses in all sizes. I was able to try on dresses that fit. They did not make me feel like I was a "plus size". It is about time stores realized that the average american woman is not a size 2. I am glad everyone had luck. Take Care

e-mail me privately and I'll tell you more such as some prices, etc.

Good luck! : )
