That's how I feel Elizabeth. I have to live with my sister-in-laws until the end now. Although a card was all I really expected, I have to let go now of the fact that there was no gift. At first I was hurt, but now, I'm trying to see my mom's way of "Live Well, Laugh Often, Love Much". I went in saying "Whatever we receive is a gift". I tried to keep that thought the whole time; I ended up with enough to pay for my wedding twice.

That sounds exactly right. Once you order the dress, it's yours. Some women find a dress in a magazine and try to find shops that carry that dress. I found a dress in a magazine and couldn't find a store that carried it anywhere! Finally, I found a store that said that had one very similar. I ended up going there, trying on the dress they carried and liking it better than the one in the magazine.

Please read..sorry so long

I too am sorry that you had such a horrible experience. I would have loved to have received such a thoughtful gift. My favorite gifts from the wedding were 2 home made cards that we received....you can't put a price on sentiment.

Because years later, when all the checks have cleared and the bills have long passed, we won't remember who gave what cash gift. What we will still have are gifts like your poem book and my home made cards.....and all the memories related to them.

:)

God that is a horrible thing that you went thru ! Sounds like that girl (the bride) is obnoxious, unappreciative and selfish ! You should just ignore her and dont let it bother you...if people truly want you at their wedding, they will invite you, not expecting you to pay for the lobster !! My sister in law had a coworker come with nothing at all, (not even a card)...she was confused but didnt ever mention a word to anyone....... I think your gift was very thoughtful and come to think of it, she doesnt even deserve it !!!!

Ask her if she made out like a bandit at her wedding ?? Or crack a "weddings for profit" joke !

I know its not worth stooping to those levels but sometimes its tempting to SPEAK UP !!

If anyone has lived anywhere else in the country, they would know that weddings in other states are nothing like weddings in the metropolitan area. My sister got married upstate about 10 years ago and there were people who gave envelopes with $10 & $20. Personally, I have family in Texas, Alabama, and Florida and I am not expecting any monetary gifts from them at all. That is just not their way. However, in NYC and Long Island I have noticed that not only is a monetary gift expected, but that it is almost unheard of to give anything else.

Then again, weddings in NY are a lot more expensive than they are anywhere else.

I agree. I've been to Asian and weddings in Antiqua and the only thing they expect of you is to show up. My fiance and I are footing the bill for the wedding and we only expect the guest to show up and have a good time. I would be embarassed to even mention that someone didn't bring a gift. Sorry but I was not raised that way, tis better to give than receive is my motto. Just think guests are expected to give gifts at the engagement party, bridal shower and wedding a bit much for me.

I believe they are owned by the same family and from what I've heard, you pay more but the food is suppossed to be amazing. Good Luck!

For those of you who are wondering..I never did say anything, I simply chalked it up to her ignorance. I am getting married next September(2nd time is the charm I hope)and the only gift that I truly desire is the presence of my friends and family on this special day. The monetary gift thing really is pretty unique to this area(LI, NYC). The real gift is the love that everyone shares with you on your wedding day.

Then again, weddings in NY are a lot more expensive than they are anywhere else.
