Puerto Rican wedding traditions??
Deanna just reminded me that I need help with this. FH is not into his culture or traditions but I still want to do something to honor it either way at least for his family and since we'll have a few Jewish traditions. Any ideas?? We will definately play some Spanish music but is there any actual 'tradition' associated with Puerto Rican weddings?TiA!

Re: Puerto Rican wedding traditions??
okay i asked my dad who is 100% Puerto Rican and he told me the only things he can think of are:1-The bride walks to the church with her entire family behind her......kind of like supporting her decision of marriage (almost like a parade)
2-The god mother of the groom is the MOH for the bride.....
My dad thought I was asking for me so he's like 'there is no way you have to do that stuff, i don't want you to.....its very very old school'...... lol no way am i doing that....my MOH would kill me

Re: Puerto Rican wedding traditions??
wow yea def won't do that either ...I am from Ecuador and our traditions are a bit weird to! like you get a MOH and a sponsor lmao!! also you have to wear a 'lazo' like a rope signifying unity and also we are supposed to have 2 weddings the civil where you go get married like a week before and then have a party in the bride's house then the big wedding in the church with the reception lol way to many things i don't want to do

Re: Puerto Rican wedding traditions??
yeah i'm not doing those traditions either, my mom actually did the MOH thing when my dad and her got married.....and she was extremely upset over this......her best friend since she was a little girl was not her MOH, instead my dad's god mother was (who barely spoke to her)......honestly if you don't find anything just go with some spanish music and they'll be happy

Re: Puerto Rican wedding traditions??
Ok, so I found a couple of things, I have the websites at home but this is the jist of them...stil nothing that Im going to do, maybe one.Ok this is from memory,
Dress up a doll like a barbie or any kind exactly like the bride and put it on the head table, LMAO! Sorry this is creepy, my FH says its like voodoo. Then people like dress the doll with things, I forget what, like coins or somethin.
Decorate the cake with seashells. Well if you're having a beach theme, then sure but if not, then um no for me.
Ok, then this is something that sounds reasonable to me. The officiant blesses a plate of coins and then once the vows are done, the groom gives it to the bride as a symbol of prosperity and wealth for your life together.
then, there is something called 'ciapas' i kind of skipped the details but to me it sounds exactly like what a breat cancer ribbon or any of those ribbons for causes look like. They are supposedly attached somehow to the brides bouquet and they have the couples names written on it and then the date which sounds normal and then the ribbons are cut off the bouquet and given to each guest.
the last thing i remember is just a flower which is the traditional flower for the bride to carry. i forget the name but will post the site later if anyone is interested.
o well, i guess its mostly lots of alcolol and dancing for us!!!

Re: Puerto Rican wedding traditions??
i am puerto rican and spanish from spain....i may do the blessing of the coins but there is also another more 'spanish tradition' that puerto ricans have adopted as well. In the ceremony, the officiant takes a rosary and entwines the couples hands in a figure eight or infinity sign. then he blesses the rosary and the hands. I think there is a certain reading for it too. hope this helps.p.s. i think that doll thing is creepy

Re: Puerto Rican wedding traditions??
yeah the coins sounds like a good idea.....but oh my that doll one is very creepy!!lolMaybe have your FH just ask his family if there is something traditional that maybe they would like you guys to do? because bottom line is if they have never seen this traditional extra your doing for his culture they're not going to get it.....but glad you found some different ideas!

yeah you are right, i was thinking that too. unfortunately his mom says she doesnt know anything (but who knows if he really asked, lol...)
The rosary sounds so nice. I would love to do that but since I am Jewish, my family would not be happy with that. Thanks though!
