question for anyone with tiffany setting engagement ring
hi,long story, but i'm helping my brother do some research. he was interest in the tiffany setting engagement ring, but since he can't afford it from tiffany's he's having someone duplicate it. he lives in PA and doesn't have a tiffany's there. he wanted to know if at the bottom of the six prongs there are tiny holes? or maybe it's just on the top and bottom prongs?
hope this is clear... THANK YOU SO MUCH IN ADVANCE!!

There's a hole at the top (clearly where the diamond falls into in the crown or head) and at the bottom (where the culet is at) and that's it. I'm sure if you google it you can find pictures.

Re: question for anyone with tiffany setting engagement ring
hi LaLa and SomethingBlu,thanks for the responses...LaLa i actually sent you forum mail...
so somethingblu i don't really understand your response...but your last image is exactly the one i was looking at...do you think that's a 'tiny hole' at the bottom of that prong? and if so, are there those 'tiny holes' on the bottom of all six of the prongs around the diamond?
i actually went to tiffany this evening and it was so hard to tell if those were 'tiny holes'...but i concluded it was...when i went to report back to my brother he asked if they were on all six...that stumped me.. :( perhaps it's just on the top and bottom prongs and 4 on the sides just have 'grooves'?
oh and i should have made that clear...he's in pittsburgh...
thanks so much again!!

No, that's not a 'tiny hole' and there aren't any 'tiny holes'. It's called the 'head' or 'crown' and any reputable jeweler should know what that is; explain that to him. The 'hole' is air... Again, you shouldn't have to explain to a jeweler how to make a ring. A knowledgeable jeweler should know what a Tiffany setting is and how to duplicate it to the best of his ability, although that's a copyrighted setting. Why not go to Tiffany for the ring?

Re: question for anyone with tiffany setting engagement ring
Not sure if the tiny holes you mentioned are part of the design...only because, I think that the 'tiffany' setting is trademarked and if that is the case, a jewler cannot copy it exactly...there would need to be some variation. (or maybe that is just the 'Lucidia')

All Tiffany settings are copyrighted. The Lucida has a patent. NONE can be duplicated.

Ahh! So I checked out the Tiffany website (didn't see ant holes), but it looks like only the Tiffany seting and the Lucidia have the trademark symbol...and you say that the Lucidia has the patent....I think that means that just the Lucidia cannot be duplicated, and the trademark is for the name (can't call any design 'tiffany' or 'lucidia')...sorry to get so far off topic

Re: question for anyone with tiffany setting engagement ring
No, it's a solitare setting with 6 prongs and a round diamond in the center....there aren't any holes on the bottom, at least not on my ring.

ALL Tiffany settings are protected and owned by Tiffany. The trademark is for the name...but there is a patent for the Lucida setting and stone cut and all designs are copyright protected. They cannot be duplicated. Period.
