I usually have an idea of how much I want to spend and then buy according to that amount. So if there is one large item that fits the amount, I get that, otherwise I get a bunch of smaller things for that amount.

It depends. The last gift i gave was one big thing from a bunch of us.
But one of my favorite gifts from my shower was a huge storage container with all sorts of little kitchen gagets, plastic baggies and all this little stuff that you really need. I loved it!

one of the best gifts i have heard of was what one of my neighbor's made. she made a 'junk drawer'. it was literally some type of drawer (didnt see it my mom went) with EVERYTHING one would need that goes in the junk drawer. she said it was the most original thing she had ever seen and everyone loved it.
