I agree with this. And not even judging from grammar or spelling, I think the content of what is written can indicate the level of intelligence.

Sometimes on here we get into more serious questions, and those times I can tell who has thought out, supported ideas versus those who just say the sky is blue because everyone says it is blue. I agree with you in that respect, as someone who often doesn't participate in discussions unless I have a well thought out and supported response. However, I also think that the difference can be due to level of impulsivity and emotional responses. Someone may be intelligent and impulsive and respond to something that hits her emotionally with her gut reaction, while someone else may be able to control their impulses, put emotion aside and think about their response. Just another aspect to think about.

I agree- alot more goes into how a person presents themselves then where they went to school and what level of education they completed

there are definatley expections to every rule- I know 2 of them

I have to say that I was much more interested in the posters who offered nuanced, detailed discussion rather than knee-jerk reactions. Even if I disagreed with the political positions of these posters, I found myself respecting their intelligence.

SweetAdeline, that was key for me as well! I'm a rabid liberal, but during election season there was a staunch republican with some really excellent and well thought out arguments and beliefs. I didn't agree with her but I absolutely respected her for not only having convictions, but taking the time really analyze them and not resorting to trite sound bites.

I agree with both of you here. I am not very political, and my views tend to be middle-of-the-road, leaning toward the left. However, I really enjoyed reading the well thought-out debates and discussions from both sides.

If you read all my posts you would see that I am in a doctoral program. But I do feel that any idiot can complete a dissertation if they are really motivated. It's not that hard, it is just tedious. I think the ABDs lacked the commitment and drive, not the intelligence to complete it.

I agree with most of your posts, Beth, but here I respectfully disagree. I think a lot of it depends on the discipline of the degree and the university where one is studying. I have degrees in Education and engineering. From my own experience, I would say that it was much easier to get a PhD or an EdD in at the University where I got my masters in education than it would be to get a PhD in engineering just about at any school. This is my opinion, but also based on personal observations.

Also, I do think going to an Ivy does open up doors to people because of connections and the cache of the school. I didn't go to an Ivy for engineering, but my school is consistently ranked one of the most competitive to get into in the US and it has made a difference in getting job interviews.

Another explanation for the detailed response with factual support is the time and energy of the poster. I can see simply wanting to give your opinion without having the time or the desire to go into a diatribe as to why you feel that way.

That's definitely a good point, but I also think that there are some issues deserving of a well-thought-out response rather than just a quick emoticon or remark.

Personally I could care less where a person went to school or what degree they have- it's meaningless to me- it does not equate happiness, success, or anything else in my opinion

In fact I went to FIT- and I got a job with a top retailer right out of school- right along side people who went to Ivy's and private schools- of everyone in my training class, I was promoted first and hold the highest position to this day

It doesn't matter where I went to school- or what degree I have, I speak well, I present myself well- and that goes just as far as education- if not further

I hear what you're saying. I think if the goal is just to have a doctorate, not minding what discipline or school, almost anyone could get into a program. Whether or not they do the work to get out is another story. My ex from college is getting his PhD in engineering at Stanford now and I know he is working much harder than I am on mine. He is making nanobots to perform surgery, and my research, while original, is more running numbers and writing results.

FIT is probably very well respected in your field, perhaps more so than an Ivy education, and may have opened doors for you because you went there - in addition to you being a smart, articulate person.
