I read in an etiquette book that you either put Black Tie or not, you supposedly should not use Black Tie optional.

I wouldn't write anything if you want it to be formal, but not black tie- your guests should be able to figure out that its formal based on the place and sat night wedding...

HTH

I agree.

I disagree.

If people knew how to dress, there wouldn't be a need to say anything at all. I can't tell you how many Saturday night formal functions I have been too where it was indicated black tie and some people didnt even wear jackets. Not everyone knows that 'Saturday night' means formal attire.

Re: Spinoff to black tie wedding...

I went to a Thursday night wedding at the Crest Hollow and the invite looked formal, but there was no writing on it, so I wore a long black and floral sundress with a shawl, well almost all the other guests wore what I did. The bride and her family were decked out to the nines and she was upset that her guests were not dressed up. I heard her overseaying it to her MOH in the hallway. So I would err on the side of caution and put something on the invite since it seems to be important to you.
As an aside, we had black tie on the invte and some people still wore suits and plainer dresses. Unless you are having a staturday night or sunday twilight at the waldorf=astoria, garden city hotel, or the like, it will not be obvios that your wedding is really formal.

Black tie optional

That way the gentlemen can still wear dark suits.
