Re: Spinoff to: Those thinking of moving out of New York...
Thanks for all the feedback.I love LI, but I am frustrated that two decent salaries it is IMPOSSIBLE to buy a nice house. I really dont want to leave, but I have it in the back of my mind. It is just so hard for young couples to make it here!

I personally hate living on LI. Things have changed a lot since I was a kid. I have always likes Florida, for $200k you can get a castle with an inground pool.It KILLS me though how much I will miss my family, especially my brother.
Who knows I guess.

Christy,Move down to Florida! You love disney and can live near it! Plus as an added bonus you can hang w/ me
Living in Florida is not so bad and I thought I would really miss my family alot but I realized througout the winter someone is always coming down to visit! I try and go up once during the summer and also at a holiday. If there are any kids in your family people will want to come to disney so there is another way to see people.

I grew up in NY, lived in Virginia for several years and just returned to NY a couple of years ago. I had reverse culture shock coming back! I love being closer to my family, but actually miss VA! Northern VA, D.C. area are really great (still pretty expensive). I think cost of living in VA is great for what you get in a lot of areas. And...you're right...there are lots of NY/NJ transplants which makes it easy to find like-minded people and adjust. I would love to move back to VA, but my FI will have none of if (job-related).

One of my best friends moved to Atlanta about 2 years ago, am going to visit her in a few weeks, so we shall see. I DO have an aversion to Atlanta b/c I hate the BRAVES!!
grr.....dont know if I could live there.....My other best friend moved to LA last summer, I could def. live out there (never been, but I work in TV so its a better fit career wise). My DH refuses to move away from LI, so we are just going to try to find something here....
sigh..not going to be easy!!

I would like to move away, at least for a couple of years, but FH would never. We already have a house here, I would just like to experience a different area and lifestyle. I don't think I would vere settle down to raise kids anywhere other than NY though.

California, without a doubt. i was born and raised there and can't wait to go back. DH loves it out there as well. the weather is so much better and life is so much easier. your plans are never ruled by how bad the weather will be. the streets and highways are so much nicer. people are more laidback. i just love it there ... can't wait to move.

I would move to South Florida tomorrow if FH would!!Most of my family has moved down there, and I love the weather and house prices!!
Same here!! We actually have calls in with some buliders and we are in the process of trying to buy some land in SW Florida. FI has ajob lined up already for after the wedding making what he makes here and I should have no problem finding work there. The only thing that is stopping us from leaving now is the wedding, so only 6 more months and then it is bye bye NY.

Re: Spinoff to: Those thinking of moving out of New York...
After growing up on LI, moving to Orlando, and then to CA, I can't wait to be back in NY. The cost of living is definitely better in FL than NY, but living most of the year inside with the A/C was not fun. CA is nice, but expensive and crowded (at least here in the Bay Area). In this area houses are just as expensive as LI, if not more so, and they are smaller with less property. The weather is nice, especially to do outdoorsy type stuff, but I personally don't like only having rain during 3 months a year. (FH thinks I'm nuts on that one!)

Re: Spinoff to: Those thinking of moving out of New York...
I moved to Maryland in 1998. Initially, my plan was to move back to LI after law school, but half way through my first year down here, I knew I was staying. I lived in Baltimore City for the first few years and it is such a great city. I could walk to the Inner Harbor and Camden Yards from the law school. Now that I am an old married lady I no longer live in Baltimore, but it is a pretty short drive and the counties surrounding Baltimore are a lot like LI. The weather is pretty much the same as NY. You can only tell the difference in the beginning of the spring and fall. I love that I can get back to my family in 3 1/2 hours and that I was able to buy a big, 7 month old house as soon as I got back from my honeymoon.
Rachel, we should meet up when you move to DE. Depending on where you go, it might only be about an hour from me!

Re: Spinoff to: Those thinking of moving out of New York...
i had posted this question last week!
it is sad that two people that make decent teaching salaries are struggling to save for a dwon payment on a house that is ridiculously overpriced. I love NY but have such mixed feelings about moving. My Dad lives in CT and I dont talk to my mom. My sister and cousins live on the island but other than that theres no one else here. My grandparents are gone, my husbands mom and step dad are moving to Florida, his aunt just moved to FLorida... im just so confused!!!
