Re: What happened with the ladies who work in the city & live on LI?

fran...I think DH should give you a foot rub!!!!

well what I was thinking about the economy...is that if more people want to compete for those jobs...there maybe a (albeit slow) move for businesses to move to LI...since there is a larger demand in the labor force...

Re: What happened with the ladies who work in the city & live on LI?

I walked from 47th street over the 59th street bridge to Greenpoint Brooklyn where I stayed at a friends house. I got home at 8:00 this morning. Not too bad. I guess I walked for about 2-3 hours or so.

Re: What happened with the ladies who work in the city & live on LI?

My Dh was stuck in the city. I had no power or phone service. He had the AT&T cell phone which wasn't working for several hours. I didn't know where he was or how he was until he finally got through to me at 3:30 am when I got power back.
I didn't sleep all night. I was worried sick.
He finally grabbed a cab with 2 coworkers for $140 and walked in at 5:30am. He told me he had a snickers bar for dinner and a warm grape drink (all he could find.) I'm just glad to have him home safe!

Re: What happened with the ladies who work in the city & live on LI?

I work in the city. I stayed with someone who had a small loft with 1 window. Sat on the stoop with friends drinking and watching lots of people. Sweated to death. Had to report to work this morning (same clothes as yesterday). My wonderful manager let me leave with 3 others that had stayed the night in the office. $180 +tip for the car svc. Left at 10am, finally got home at 2. There is still no power in the city and the trains aren't running.

So glad to be home. Hope everyone else is all right.

Re: What happened with the ladies who work in the city & live on LI?

Fran M and Snowboard girl - we were probably walking side by side! Man was that trip hell! I too walked from 47th Street in Times Sq over the 59th St. bridge and into Woodside and spent the night at a friend's house. It had to be about 8 miles... in VERY uncomfy sandles nonetheless! Just came back from getting a spa pedicure. Man did I NEED that!

Re: What happened with the ladies who work in the city & live on LI?

Hey ladies. First time I'm on my computer since Thursday!

My brother-in-law walked 19 miles from 48th Street in Manhattan to Bensonhurst. His feet were bleeding when he got home.

DH and I met up outside my building (after the security in my building told everyone to stay at their desks...we bolted totally out of paranoia).
We tried to wait for the express bus that usually takes us home, but the line was about 75-80 people deep. When the bus showed up, the ANIMAL ASSHOLES behind us (about 50 or so people) overran us in line and crowded the bus. In the process, they knocked an 8 months pregnant woman into DH. DH and I started screaming at everyone that ran ahead, and DH took the pregnant woman by the hand to try and get her on the bus, I followed him because people started YELLING at him and I was going to kill someone....he was screaming back at them and NO ONE cared that he had an 8 months pregnant woman that he was trying to help! He tried to get her on the bus but no one on the bus would get off, or offer up their seat at least. I don't care what anyone says about NY'ers coming together, we saw the absolute WORST in people on Thursday.

DH and I wound up leaving the bus 'line' and walked back to my building (this was about 2 1/2 hours later) to go to the bathroom, where we bumped into my boss and a few coworkers who were carring a man and his wheelchair down the stairs. (What a difference huh? We saw the worst in people, then saw the best just a little while later).

We waited things out for a while with my boss, went for some food and drinks, and then got in his truck to come home. On the drive through the city with no lights....we saw the biggest morons on earth. 3rd Avenue by all the bars, jerkoff guys and girls thinking it was a block party walking in the middle of pitch dark avenues, literally running in front of cars. We got home at about 11:30PM. Took about 3 1/2 hours for a 30 minute trip.

This whole experience has really made be disgust some people.

Re: What happened with the ladies who work in the city & live on LI?

I slept on my conference table in my office with 5 other stranded LIers...it was awful. No hotels were available, but the city seemed pretty calm, at least where I was (Misty ). I have rodents in my office so there was no way I was going to sleep on the floor. Luckily we had a baby shower luncheon earlier that day so we had food for dinner. The next morning I took a bus to Jamaica and and another bus out to Ronokonkoma. So, from 9 am to 12:15 I was on a bus, UGGGGH! I have to say the MTA had it very well-organized though, maybe because it was early am. I was never so happy to sleep in my bed last night with my husband!!

Re: What happened with the ladies who work in the city & live on LI?

I was thinking about all the LIers. I've supposed to be moving next month and I kept thinking to myself 'what if I lived in LI what would I do?' I walked over the 59th street bridge which is nothing compared to some of you. When I got to LIC I ran into some people from LI they were walking to the LIE. I guess they were going to hitch hike or something. I have to be honest when this happened...I thought to myself...that's it I'm looking for a job on the island!!!
