I found an Essense of Australia dress for $1700 plus $400 cap for alterations. Does this sound 'reasonable'?

It sounds reasonable if you are going for a designer dress vs. something less expensive (eg some of the dresses at a place like Davids Bridal).. My dress was an Allure, was about 2100 plus alterations

$1700 sounds about right. Mine is $1365 plus tax but I was able to get 10% off due to the trunk show. It's a Lillian West dress. My alterations will be $450.

Honestly reasonable is whatever you personally feel is worth it - just like how we spend money on everything else in our lives, IMO.I think it’s all relative! But in the world of wedding dresses, $1700 is definitely in the common range that I hear and similar to my range, also. Some people think that’s crazy and some people will spend $10,000 on a dress! It’s what you (and your FH, if you’re sharing finances already) feel is reasonable.

Absolutely reasonable! My dress is $1832 and that was with the 20% off discount I got for a sale they were having and my veil was $320 after a 50% off sale. Like the poster above me said, it is all relative. Some people are paying $6k for photography alone and they consider that reasonable while I pass out at that price lol.

My dress is like 2300 before alterations. Hoping I wont have many. It's a Mikaela dress.

It's all relative certain things are more important than others when planning a wedding. My dress is a Pnina Tornei from Klienfelds $15,000 so it just all depends and this a second marriage for me.

I just bought mine at rk bridal..... It was a mori lee for $1250.
