Re: When did you realize it was time for you to move out of your parents house?

my first week of college and it was only reinforced by having to move back home after graduation for 3 years.

Mr Boots once said that he never saw the point in moving out until you're married. I laughed and laughed. He didn't go away to school and has always lived at home, so he never got that taste of independence and self-reliance. A major coup was moving into the apartment in his house. Now he's drunk with the power of a locked door!!

I often wish I had lived alone before moving in with Mr Boots, but my financial situation didn't exactly allow that (as you well know!). But I had enough experience 'running a household' in college. I was the only one of my college roommates who knew how to fix a garbage disposal, stop a toilet from running, fix a blown fuse and mop a floor!

The thing is, whether you do it in June or after the wedding, you're going to be living with him. You're either ready or you have to get ready.

Are you feeling guilt about your mom and sisters?

Re: When did you realize it was time for you to move out of your parents house?

It won't be like your father leaving all over again!!

You took on a lot of responsibilties when he left, but that doesn't mean your life is on hold! Your mother will miss you, but she'll be okay! You're moving across town... not to Germany! E is almost 23 and Little Miss Thang is 16... they still need you, but they also need to see you start your own life, independant of the family unit.

Don't worry about losing your parental role, bask in gaining your new married-older-sister role!

And the being scared because you've never lived away from home... youd be surprised at how quickly it passes. You adjust and suddenly you can't imagine living any other way!

It will be okay, I promise! I'll even help you move!

Re: When did you realize it was time for you to move out of your parents house?

As soon as I finished college I knew I WANTED to move out, but couldnt do so until I was 26 and my mother tried to give me major guilts over it by saying 'Oh your life is sooooo miserable here. ' She couldnt handle the loss of control she once had. She still can't. I told her a parent should be happy when a child is emotionally and financially ready to leave the nest. She didnt get it.

Re: When did you realize it was time for you to move out of your parents house?

I went to boarding school at 13, then away to college...I did live with my mother for a bit after college...I had been planning to move in with friends in Hoboken, and then met DH and didn't want to move any more...Staying with my mom was different though--my parents divorced after I graduated college, so she was just starting living on her own too. We have more like a friend than mother/daughter relationship, so I actually had fun knowing her outside of knowing her living with my dad. She was really a changed and better person away from him, and I am so glad we got that chance. Moving out was good too though--I think she needs to push herself to find more friends and maybe eventually a guy (any eligible males in their 60s)?

Re: When did you realize it was time for you to move out of your parents house?

I didn't really want to move out until I got engaged and DH and I started registering places and I got interested in decorating. I wanted my own home then.

I never felt the need to leave my parents' home. They treated me like an adult and gave me privacy and companionship. DH and I both lived with our parents until we got married. I liked it that way.

Re: When did you realize it was time for you to move out of your parents house?

I had always been a homebody becuase my parents gave me no freedom whatsoever. One day I wanted to go out and my dad was on a power trip and said I couldn't go anywhere and I got the 'your under my roof, you do as I say' line. I'd had enough! The next day I went to a real estate and in less than a week I was signing my lease for my new apartment.

I was 20 at the time and I have never gone back.
